Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Barnes
Our walk-in wardrobes are made for homes in Barnes and all over London. It starts with a design visit to measure and plan the layout, then a quote in writing. Everything is made at our workshop and fitted in your home. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a bedroom without crowded wardrobes and proper shoe storage.
Around Barnes, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast with an alcove either side. Fitted furniture can fill the alcoves, wrap round the chimney breast or run across a whole wall. Because older floors slope and walls bow, everything is scribed and levelled on site.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Barnes
Will a conservation area stop me having walk-in wardrobes fitted in Barnes?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Barnes Bridge station?
Yes, homes across Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.
Can a box room become a walk-in wardrobe?
Often, yes. A box room can take hanging, shelves and drawers on its walls and still leave room to move. We check the room at the measuring visit.
What finishes do you offer?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Barnes
About 52% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Barnes went up before 1919, and about 17% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List has 27 entries within half a mile of the centre of Barnes. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home in Barnes is on or near a main road, tell us during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
For a family home near St Osmund's Catholic Primary School, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If your home is one of the older houses near Barnes Methodist Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.
Barnes is part of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, about 4 miles south-west of Twickenham. Design visits and fitting in Barnes can be on a Saturday, by prior arrangement. Barnes is one of 19 places on our list for Richmond upon Thames.

Local landmarks in Barnes
The streets we cover here include those near Polish Library POSK in London, The Harrodian School and Chiswick School, among other places. Barnes has its own railway station: Barnes Bridge station. A little further out are Putney Exchange (1.4 miles south-east) and Antique Breadboard Museum (1.2 miles south-east). For a walk, there’s Duke's Hollow.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
What prompts walk-in wardrobes in Barnes
Couples sharing a wardrobe often want more space each. A walk-in wardrobe can be planned with a side for each, so both have room.
If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:
- Room for two wardrobes in one space
- Proper shoe storage
- More space for clothes and shoes
- A calmer, clearer bedroom

Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
How fitting day works
Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays during the design visit.
- You get in touch and tell us about your clothes, shoes and bags and how you get ready.
- At the design visit we measure the room and plan hanging lengths, shelves, drawers and shoe storage with you.
- You receive a quote in writing for the walk-in wardrobe.
- We build the carcasses, shelves and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the units in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
