Walk-in wardrobes in Turnham Green, Hounslow

Thinking about walk-in wardrobes in Turnham Green? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote, before anything is made.

  • Setting aside a corner of a large bedroom
  • A dressing table with drawers and a mirror
  • A use for a small spare room

Walk-in wardrobes designed for your room

Practical tips

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Keep the room ventilated
  • Have a clear-out before we measure

Store heavy things on lower shelves, and do not overload a single rail. That keeps the hanging and shelves in good shape.

A new partition wall is building work, so it comes before us. We make and fit the units inside.

Walk-in wardrobes in Turnham Green

You do not need a spare room to have a walk-in wardrobe. Where a bedroom is large enough, a section can be set aside with a partition or a run of units, with doors or left open. Any new partition wall is for your builder, and we fit the furniture inside. Most enquiries start with the right mix of long and short hanging and a dressing area in part of a bedroom; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

With a large share of homes around Turnham Green built before 1919, many bedrooms sit against solid brick external walls. Those walls can be colder than internal ones, so wardrobes and storage on them are designed with ventilation behind and inside to help avoid condensation. Smaller back bedrooms in houses of that age are good places for walk-in wardrobes.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Turnham Green

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Turnham Green were built before 1919 (about 56%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 16%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Turnham Green include Chiswick House Conservatory (Grade I), less than half a mile west, and Deer House in Chiswick Park Near Italian Garden (Grade I), less than half a mile west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Around Turnham Green, about 56% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Hounslow as a whole, about 16%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of walk-in wardrobes.

Close to Dukes Meadows? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. The wider area includes historic houses such as Hogarth's House, about 0.2 miles west. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

What happens on fitting day

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. We start with the space and the clothes it needs to hold.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the hanging, shelves and drawers, including any dressing table.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The units are made and finished in our workshop.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. We then check the doors and drawers with you.

Preparing the room

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Advice

Questions we are often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Chiswick station?

Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Does a conservation area in or near Turnham Green affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Is ventilation important in a dressing room?

Yes. A room full of clothes needs air moving through it, particularly against a cooler external wall. We allow for ventilation in the design.

How long will the walk-in wardrobe take to fit?

How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will talk it through at the measuring visit.

Can a walk-in wardrobe be part of a bedroom?

Yes. A run of units can define a dressing area, while any new walls are for your builder.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What it is made from

Doors and drawer fronts

We make doors in a style that suits the room and finish them to match. Some areas can be left open.

Spray-painted finish

You choose the colour, and we apply it in the workshop.

Is it time for walk-in wardrobes?

Couples sharing a wardrobe often want more space each. We can design separate areas for hanging, shelves and drawers, so both have room.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Turning a box room into a dressing room
  • Room for a growing wardrobe
  • Hanging for coats, dresses and shirts
  • A bedroom without crowded wardrobes

For an older house near St. Nicholas Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
