Walk-in wardrobes in Richmond upon Thames: what you get

Good light helps you see colours and find things, and any new lights or wiring are for your electrician. We can plan the units so there’s space for the lighting you want, and agree the details at the design visit. If you’re living with the right mix of long and short hanging and room for two wardrobes in one space, walk-in wardrobes made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Older bedrooms bring bowed walls and high ceilings, newer ones stud walls and lower ceilings. A home in Richmond upon Thames might be either, or neither. We scribe, level and fix to suit whichever you have. The height of the room decides how tall the pieces can be.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Richmond upon Thames is partly covered by the St Matthias Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 44% of homes in the neighbourhood around Richmond upon Thames were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. A small spare room in an older house can make a good dressing room.

For a family home near Marshgate Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as The Trumpeters' House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Pembroke Lodge, about 1.3 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

How it’s made

Hanging rails

Long hanging is kept for coats and dresses, and the rest can be double hung.

Shelves

Upper shelves are good for cases and seasonal clothes, with everyday items lower down.

From workshop to your room

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It helps to clear the room and the route in before fitting day, including pictures on nearby walls. We cover floors and doorways first. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the room.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and the layout inside.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop.
  5. The walk-in wardrobe is fitted in your home. Each unit is set level and scribed to the walls.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time

Advice

Is bespoke worth it?

Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, as well as a bigger outlay. What you get is storage designed for what you own and the space you have. Standard units come with shelves and rails where the maker put them, which may not suit what you need to store. With fitted furniture, the inside is planned around what you keep.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Questions we are often asked

Do you make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Richmond upon Thames?

Yes, Richmond upon Thames is within the area we cover, which takes in all of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

Does a conservation area in or near Richmond upon Thames affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us, and we’ll see what we can do.

Should I send photos?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
