Questions from Teddington

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Teddington station?

Yes, homes across Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Teddington?

Yes, we work across Richmond upon Thames, Teddington included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

How long does fitting take?

It depends on the room. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote, so you’ll know before we start.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Lighting makes a big difference in a dressing room, and any new lights or wiring are for your electrician. We can plan the units so there’s space for the lighting you want, and agree the details during the design visit. We make walk-in wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are hanging for coats, dresses and shirts and storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe.

In a Victorian bedroom, the chimney breast typically sits on a side wall, with a recess to each side. That layout is worth knowing around Teddington, where a large share of homes were built before 1919. Storage can go in each recess, with a bridge of cupboards over the chimney breast, leaving the breast itself clear. Any capped chimney is kept ventilated.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Caring for painted furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Have a clear-out before we measure
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Leave room for air behind hanging clothes
  • Plan shoe storage around what you own

Keep the room ventilated, especially if it is on an external wall. Avoid packing clothes tight against the back of the units to help air move.

A new partition wall is building work, so it comes before us. We fit the furniture once the room is ready.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Teddington

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Teddington were built before 1919 (about 46%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 17%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The High Street Teddington Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Teddington. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 31% of households in the neighbourhood around Teddington live in terraced houses, according to Census 2021. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, both good spaces for fitted storage.

If you live in a flat close to Teddington station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For a family home near St Mary's and St Peter's Church of England Primary School, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Teddington is within the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, about 1 mile north of Twickenham. We cover Teddington as part of our work across Richmond upon Thames, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Our work takes in places right across Richmond upon Thames.

Design visits and fitting in TW11, TW12, TW2 and TW1 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. If your home is on a street such as Station Road, High Street and Church Road, or close by, we can visit to measure up for walk-in wardrobes. The A311 and A313 run close to Teddington; on busy main roads, unloading walk-in wardrobes takes a little planning. If you are just outside Teddington, we also cover Strawberry Hill (1 mile north), Fulwell (1 mile north-west), Hampton Hill (1 mile west), Ham (1 mile north-east) and Eel Pie Island (1 mile north). Elsewhere in Richmond upon Thames, we also cover Richmond (2 miles north-east), Richmond upon Thames (3 miles north-east), Hampton (2 miles west), Barnes (5 miles north-east), Kew (5 miles north-east) and Hanworth (2 miles west). Being one of the larger places in Richmond upon Thames, Teddington is covered for walk-in wardrobes and everything else we make.

Why people ask for walk-in wardrobes in Teddington

Some want somewhere to sit and get ready. We can design a dressing table into the room next to the hanging and shoe storage.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Shelves for shoes and bags
  • Storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe
  • A built-in dressing table
  • Separate space for two people’s clothes

Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Teddington, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • How they handle walls that are not straight

How to choose a carpenter in London

From workshop to your room

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. First, you let us know about the space and how you dress. It could be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom.
  2. We visit, measure up and plan the layout with you.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. We build the carcasses, drawers and shelves in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The units are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Ready-made wardrobe systems are easy to buy and often cheaper, and in a square room they can work. In an older room with uneven walls and a sloping floor, they leave gaps. Ours is built to the room’s real shape. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Each side can be made to its own size.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Take a look at bespoke vs off-the-shelf or what to look for in a quote.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.
