How we make walk-in wardrobes for Old Chiswick

Ventilation matters in a room full of clothes, especially on an external wall, which can be colder than internal walls. Good ventilation helps avoid condensation and mould, so we allow for it in the design. Most enquiries start with a use for a small spare room and proper shoe storage, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Older London houses often have sash windows, and the window position and deep reveals affect where furniture can go. For one of the older homes that make up a large share of the housing around Old Chiswick, the layout lets the sash open fully and keeps the light unblocked. Doors are chosen and hung so they clear the bed, the radiator and the door to the room.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a softer, traditional look in an older home.

Shelves

High shelves suit things you use less often, with everyday items lower down.

Bedrooms in Old Chiswick: local notes

About 55% of the homes in the area around Old Chiswick went up before 1919, and about 14% between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 14 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Old Chiswick. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Hounslow is inside it. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Old Chiswick is covered by it. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.

For a family home near The William Hogarth Primary School, the inside of walk-in wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. For a flat near Chiswick station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Walpole House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Questions from Old Chiswick

Does a conservation area in or near Old Chiswick affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

My home in Old Chiswick is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

How are walk-in wardrobes priced?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A box room with rails and shelves and a full dressing room with drawers and a dressing table are very different jobs, so we price it after the design visit. To get started, use our contact form.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Can you turn a small spare room into a dressing room?

Often, yes. We can line a small room with hanging, shelving and drawers, while leaving space to stand and turn. We check the room at the measuring visit.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as we will have talked about at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about your clothes, shoes and bags and how you get ready.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan hanging lengths, shelves, drawers and shoe storage with you.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the layout, materials and finish.
  4. The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The walk-in wardrobe is fitted, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the inside fittings go in last.

Before we arrive

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Related advice

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Ready-made wardrobe systems are easy to buy and often cheaper, and in a simple room they may suit. In an older room with uneven walls and a sloping floor, they leave gaps. Ours is built to the room’s real shape. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so off-the-shelf pieces either don’t fit or leave a gap either side. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Caring for painted furniture

These points come up often when people plan walk-in wardrobes. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Plan lighting with your electrician
  • Decide on doors or open storage before we measure
  • Have a clear-out before we measure
  • Count your coats and long garments

Adjustable shelves can be moved as your clothes change, so the space keeps working. It’s worth a rethink each season.

If you want a partition to create the walk-in wardrobe, talk to a builder first. We make and fit the units inside.
