Walk-in wardrobes in Woodlands

Walk-in wardrobes in Woodlands: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 32% of the housing in the streets around Woodlands, with about 25% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Woodlands, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Woodlands, as it does anywhere else in London. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Gumley House (convent), original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a family home near Spring Grove Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Woodlands is about 1 mile south-west of Hounslow, within the London Borough of Hounslow. We design and make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Woodlands and across Hounslow. Woodlands is one of the places in Hounslow where we make walk-in wardrobes.

Design visits and fitting in TW7 and TW3 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. If you’re just outside Woodlands, we also cover Hounslow (1 mile south-west), Isleworth (1 mile east), Spring Grove (1 mile north), Ivybridge (1 mile south) and Lampton (1 mile north-west). We also make walk-in wardrobes in nearby places such as Feltham (3 miles south-west), Brentford (2 miles north-east), Chiswick (4 miles east), Strand-on-the-Green (3 miles east), Gunnersbury (3 miles north-east) and Hounslow West (2 miles west).

Walk-in wardrobes in Woodlands: what you get

A walk-in wardrobe needs air moving through it, particularly where it sits against a cooler external wall. Good ventilation helps avoid condensation and mould, and we design the units to allow for it. People typically come to us about proper shoe storage and the right mix of long and short hanging, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A loft conversion is a common way to add a bedroom to a semi or an interwar house, and the slope can take storage cut to its angle. Around Woodlands, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. Our part starts once the loft has been converted, with each piece scribed to the slope and set level.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Caring for painted furniture

People planning walk-in wardrobes often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Consider a mix of doors and open shelves
  • Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth
  • Have a clear-out before we measure
  • Keep the room ventilated

Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and clean easily with a soft cloth.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. We can’t advise on your lease.

What it costs

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

What we need to know

To give us a picture of the room, it’s useful to include:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Woodlands?

Yes. Woodlands is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hounslow and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Woodlands?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Can you turn a small spare room into a dressing room?

In many homes, yes. A box room can take hanging, shelves and drawers on its walls and still leave room to move. We check the room at the design visit.

How long will the walk-in wardrobe take to fit?

How long fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

We plan the route in at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

What happens during the design visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Why people ask for walk-in wardrobes in Woodlands

Others want a dressing table built in alongside the storage. A dressing table with drawers and a mirror can sit within a walk-in wardrobe next to the hanging and shoe storage.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Room for two wardrobes in one space
  • A calmer, clearer bedroom
  • The right mix of long and short hanging
  • Somewhere for shoes to live

If you live near Inwood Park, keeping walk-in wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Where other trades come in

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • New lights or sockets
  • Painting the walls of the room
  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Dressing table
  • Hanging, shelves and drawers
  • Shoe storage
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish

Fitting day, step by step

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and what you want to store.
  2. We come to measure the room and go through how the space should work.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. The units are made in our workshop.
  5. The units are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Preparing the room

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Starting with a design visit

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.
