Walk-in wardrobes in Gunnersbury, Hounslow

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on walk-in wardrobes in Gunnersbury starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Long and double hanging planned around your clothes
  • Somewhere for shoes to live
  • A built-in dressing table

Questions we’re often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Gunnersbury?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Does a conservation area in or near Gunnersbury affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?

Either works. Doors give a tidy look and help keep dust away, while open rails and shelves let you see everything. Many people choose a mix.

Do walk-in wardrobes need ventilation?

Yes. Air needs to circulate around stored clothes, particularly against a cooler external wall. We allow for ventilation in the design.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Gunnersbury

Most designs start with the hanging. Long hanging suits coats and dresses, and two rails stacked one above the other suit shirts, jackets and trousers. We plan the mix around what you actually wear. If you’re living with more space for clothes and shoes and a built-in dressing table, walk-in wardrobes made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Whether your home in Gunnersbury is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, the furniture starts from your room, not a standard size. On an external wall, ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps keep condensation away. The inside layout is planned around what you actually store.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Where other trades come in

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Advice on your lease
  • Making good walls and ceilings
  • Lighting and wiring, which are for your electrician

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Before and after fitting day

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Talk to your electrician early about lighting
  • Make sure walls are dry before units go in
  • Think about long versus double hanging
  • Sort through your clothes before the design visit

Once the units are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Treat the doors and drawer fronts gently at first and avoid harsh cleaners.

If you want a partition to create the walk-in wardrobe, talk to a builder first. We fit the furniture once the room is ready.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

Bedrooms in Gunnersbury: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 37% of the housing in the streets around Gunnersbury, with about 23% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. The centre of Gunnersbury is within about a quarter of a mile of the Thorney Hedge Conservation Area. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Around Gunnersbury, about 37% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Hounslow as a whole, about 16%, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.

For families living near Strand-on-the-Green Junior School, the inside of walk-in wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. Near listed buildings like Zoffany House, about 0.5 miles south-west of the centre of Gunnersbury, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If you live in a period home close to St Michael's Church, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Before fitting day, we check the route in along with the room itself, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You contact us about a walk-in wardrobe or dressing room.
  2. We visit to plan the room and measure the way in, including stairs, landings and doorways.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. We carry the sections in, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
