How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including anything on the walls near the work. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.

  1. You tell us about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each unit is levelled and scribed to follow the walls.
  6. Before we leave we go through the doors and drawers with you; new paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Getting ready for fitting day

Walk-in wardrobes in Hounslow: what you get

Good light helps you see colours and find things, and any new lights or wiring are for your electrician. We can plan the units so there is space for the lighting you want and agree the details when we measure. Most enquiries start with setting aside a corner of a large bedroom and a bedroom without crowded wardrobes; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Where the window, radiator and door sit decides most of a bedroom layout. Whatever kind of home you have in Hounslow, we start there, then plan fitted furniture on the walls that are left. Furniture is kept clear of radiators so the room stays warm.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Is bespoke worth it?

There is a place for both. In a square room with a tight budget, a ready-made system may be enough. For awkward rooms, period homes or a built-in look, a bespoke design tends to earn its place. Walls and floors are seldom perfectly flat in any home, so standalone furniture can lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Hounslow?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Hounslow?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

How much does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A box room with rails and shelves and a full dressing room with drawers and a dressing table are very different jobs, so we price it after the design visit. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Where other trades come in

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Making good walls and ceilings
  • Building work to create the room
  • Advice on your lease

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Hanging, shelves and drawers
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Shoe storage
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Dressing table
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Before and after fitting day

People planning walk-in wardrobes often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Consider a mix of doors and open shelves
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Plan shoe storage around what you own
  • Have a clear-out before we measure

New paintwork takes a while to harden after fitting. Treat the doors and drawer fronts gently at first and avoid harsh cleaners.

If you want a partition to create the walk-in wardrobe, talk to a builder first. We fit the furniture once the room is ready.

Is it time for walk-in wardrobes?

Some people want a calmer bedroom. Moving clothes into a separate space leaves the bedroom simpler and quieter to look at.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Proper shoe storage
  • A walk-in wardrobe in a box room
  • Room for two wardrobes in one space
  • A dressing area in part of a bedroom

If you live near Inwood Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • How doors and drawers are fitted

Walk-in wardrobes in Hounslow: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Hounslow were built since 2000 (about 30%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 27%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Hounslow, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so the rest of London has its own. If your street in Hounslow is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

For a flat near Hounslow station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. The wider area includes historic houses like Osterley House, about 1.6 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.
