Fitted wardrobes for your home in Church End

How we make fitted wardrobes for Church End

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and clothes pressed against a cold wall can lead to condensation. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls to help avoid condensation and mould. Moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice there too. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are wardrobes that are full to bursting and a bedroom that never feels tidy.

Older bedrooms bring bowed walls and high ceilings, newer ones stud walls and lower ceilings. Your home in Church End could be either, or something in between. Each is measured and fitted in its own way. The height of the room decides how tall the pieces can be.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standalone wardrobes cost less to buy and can come with you when you move. If you’re renting or moving soon, that may matter most. Fitted wardrobes stay with the room and are made for that room alone. Few rooms have truly flat walls and level floors, so standalone furniture can lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

From workshop to your room

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors.

Preparing the room

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Arranging a design visit

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you are ready, send us a few details through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

I live in a flat in Church End. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Does a conservation area in or near Church End affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

Floors in older houses are often out of level. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth and the doors line up.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

It depends on the room. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing; sliding doors suit narrow rooms, though only part of the inside is open at once. We’ll help you weigh them up when we visit.

How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?

It is worked out with you when we measure, starting from the clothes you have. Some shelves can be adjustable so the layout can change.

Before and after fitting day

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Let us know which walls face outside
  • Empty the area where we will be working
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations

Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Hinges can typically be adjusted to line the doors up again, and sliding doors can be adjusted on their runners.

Avoid drying clothes in the bedroom where you can. A little ventilation in the room helps.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

For some, it is about a calmer room. A single run of painted doors looks tidier than mixed furniture, and everything has a place behind it.

Fitted wardrobes can help with:

  • A bedroom that never feels tidy
  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes

The wider area includes historic houses like Heath Hall, about 2.1 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Church End homes and fitted wardrobes

About 36% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Church End went up before 1919, and about 29% between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. The centre of Church End is within about a quarter of a mile of the Finchley Church End Conservation Area. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. All of London, Barnet included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Church End. We plan parking and access with you at the measuring visit.

Near listed buildings like Parish Church of St Mary, under half a mile south-west of the centre of Church End, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For an older house near St Margaret's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Honest limits

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations

Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you. How it works.
