Walk-in Wardrobes in New Cross

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make walk-in wardrobes for homes in New Cross, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Long and double hanging planned around your clothes
  • A walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom
  • Proper shoe storage

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in New Cross

Some people want doors on everything; others like open shelves and rails. Doors keep dust off and give a calm look, while open storage lets you see everything at once. We’ll talk through the options at the design visit. People typically come to us about moving wardrobes out of the bedroom and somewhere for shoes to live, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Older bedrooms bring bowed walls and high ceilings, newer ones stud walls and lower ceilings. Your home in New Cross could be either, or something in between. We scribe, level and fix to suit whichever you have. The height of the room decides how tall the pieces can be.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Bedrooms in New Cross: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 43% of the housing in the neighbourhood around New Cross, with about 19% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of New Cross, 11 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 43% of homes in the streets around New Cross were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses of that age often have a small back bedroom or box room that can become a walk-in wardrobe.

Queen's House, about 1.5 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Public Library, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

New Cross is in the London Borough of Lewisham. We cover New Cross as part of our work across Lewisham. We list New Cross among 22 places we cover in Lewisham.

Here we cover the SE8, SE14 and SE4 postcode area for walk-in wardrobes. Whether you live on a street such as Ivy Road, Mona Road and Avon Road or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for walk-in wardrobes. New Cross sits close to the A2209 and A2210, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. Close by, we also work in St Johns (1 mile east), Telegraph Hill (1 mile south-west), Deptford (1 mile north-east), Nunhead (1 mile south-west) and Lewisham (1 mile south-east). We also make walk-in wardrobes in nearby places such as Catford (2 miles south), Sydenham (3 miles south), Hither Green (2 miles south-east), Perry Vale (3 miles south), Bell Green (3 miles south) and Lee (2 miles south-east). New Cross is among the bigger places we cover in Lewisham.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.

How fitting day works

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made at our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the room and what it needs to store is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan hanging lengths, shelves, drawers and shoe storage with you.
  3. You receive a written quote for the walk-in wardrobe.
  4. The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

How to prepare

Advice

Could you do it yourself?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in New Cross

Do you make walk-in wardrobes for homes in New Cross?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London, and New Cross is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in New Cross?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.

How long will the walk-in wardrobe take to fit?

How long the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Is ventilation important in a dressing room?

Yes. A room full of clothes needs air moving through it, particularly against a cooler external wall. The units are designed with ventilation in mind.

The problems walk-in wardrobes solve

Most people come to us because their clothes have outgrown their wardrobes. Clothes are squashed together and shoes pile up. A dressing room spreads it all out so you can see it.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • A built-in dressing table
  • Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom
  • Long and double hanging planned around your clothes
  • Somewhere for shoes to live

For a flat near New Cross station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • How parking will work on your street

How we price walk-in wardrobes

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • How square the room is
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What to send when you contact us

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
