How we make walk-in wardrobes for Gipsy Hill

Our walk-in wardrobes are made for homes in Gipsy Hill and all over London. We begin with a design visit, measuring the room and talking through the design, followed by a quote. Everything is built in our workshop and fitted in your home. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If you’re living with more space for clothes and shoes and a side each for a couple, walk-in wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

Some post-war homes have lightweight partitions between bedrooms, and tall furniture stands on the floor, tied back where the wall is strong enough. Because many homes around Gipsy Hill date from between 1945 and the early 1970s, we check every wall at the measuring visit. Nothing heavy relies on a thin wall alone.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Ready-made wardrobe systems are easy to buy and often cheaper, and in a simple room they may suit. In an older room with uneven walls and a sloping floor, they leave gaps. Ours is built to the room’s real shape. Ready-made pieces each bring their own height and depth, and a room full of them can look cluttered, whereas a single fitted run gives one clean line. It is painted in a colour you choose.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Why choose us

  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • 300+ projects completed

  • Built around your room

Take a look at bespoke vs off-the-shelf and what a quote should include.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check during the design visit.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

From workshop to your room

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Estates sometimes have their own parking rules alongside the council’s, so it helps to tell us during the design visit. On the day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. We start with the room you have in mind and what needs a home. It could be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and talk through hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. The units are built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring everything to your home and fit it to the room. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

How to prepare

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Ask for a quote

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

My home in Gipsy Hill is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Walk-in wardrobes are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do you make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Gipsy Hill?

Yes, we work across Lambeth, Gipsy Hill included, and across the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is it better to have doors or open storage?

Either works. Doors give a tidy look and help keep dust away, while open rails and shelves let you see everything. A mix of the two is common.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Should I send photos?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, giving a smooth finish.

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters, which matters for drawers and long shelves. The edge can be left on show or painted.

Gipsy Hill homes and walk-in wardrobes

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 35% of the housing in the area around Gipsy Hill, with about 29% built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List records 13 entries within half a mile of the centre of Gipsy Hill. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. About 46% of households in the streets around Gipsy Hill live in purpose-built flats, the 2021 Census shows. For a flat, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 0.5 miles north. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. Near listed buildings like Subway, less than half a mile east of the centre of Gipsy Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For an older house near Christ Church, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
