How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. Either way, the day is planned at the design visit. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and what you want to store. It could be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom.
  2. We visit, measure up and plan the layout with you.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. Everything is made and finished in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring everything to your home and fit it to the room.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Arranging a design visit

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Crystal Palace

Many London homes have a small room that is awkward as a bedroom. Lined with hanging and shelves, it can hold far more than a wardrobe in the bedroom, leaving the bedroom with more space. We plan the layout so you can stand, turn and see everything. Most enquiries start with a walk-in wardrobe in a box room and separate space for two people’s clothes, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, bedrooms can be anything from a box room to a big front room. Walk-in wardrobes can work in any of them, from a small spare room to a main bedroom. Every wall in Crystal Palace homes is measured on site, because none is assumed to be square.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?

Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, as well as a bigger outlay. What you get is storage designed for what you own and the space you have. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a recess, a slope or an odd corner, and most homes have one somewhere. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

Painted MDF doors look crisp and suit a calm, simple look.

Spray-painted finish

The colour is agreed with you before we spray.

Flats, leases and landlords

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

The problems walk-in wardrobes solve

After a loft conversion or a change of layout, a room may be left without a clear use. A walk-in wardrobe is a popular way to use it.

Walk-in wardrobes can help with:

  • Separate space for two people’s clothes
  • Somewhere for shoes to live
  • Turning a box room into a dressing room
  • Somewhere to sit and get ready

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Crystal Palace?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Do walk-in wardrobes need ventilation?

Yes. A room full of clothes needs air moving through it, particularly on an external wall, which can be colder and damper. We allow for ventilation in the design.

Should a walk-in wardrobe have doors?

It’s your choice. Doors give a tidy look and help keep dust away, and open storage makes things quick to find. A mix of the two is common.

How long does fitting take?

How long fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
