Walk-in wardrobes designed for your room
About our walk-in wardrobes in Little Portugal
Many London homes have a small room that’s tricky as a bedroom. Lined with hanging and shelves, it can hold far more than a wardrobe in the bedroom, and the bedroom itself feels calmer. The layout leaves room to move and to see what you have. If you are living with more space for clothes and shoes and setting aside a corner of a large bedroom, walk-in wardrobes made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
In a flat, a spare bedroom often doubles as a study or a guest room, so fitted furniture that keeps things out of sight helps it switch between them. Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Little Portugal. Doors and drawers are planned to open fully in the space you have.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Fitting day, step by step
Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.
- To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the room and what it needs to store is plenty.
- At the design visit we measure the room and plan hanging lengths, shelves, drawers and shoe storage with you.
- You receive a written quote for the walk-in wardrobe.
- The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The walk-in wardrobe is fitted, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the inside fittings go in last.
How to prepare
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
How to get a quote
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, get in touch through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases.
When is bespoke worth it?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

What else we make in Little Portugal
How we price walk-in wardrobes
What you pay depends on:
- How square the room is
- The number of doors and drawers
- The width and height of the space
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.
Getting in touch
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you contact us, it’s useful to send:
- How you want to use the space
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, use our contact form.
Common questions about walk-in wardrobes
Does a conservation area in or near Little Portugal affect fitted furniture?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
How do you fit walk-in wardrobes in a flat in Little Portugal?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Should I send pictures?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.
Do I get to choose the colour?
The choice is yours. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
What happens at the design visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.
How long does fitting take?
How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
Bedrooms in Little Portugal: local notes
About 31% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Little Portugal went up before 1919, and about 27% since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List has 165 entries within half a mile of the centre of Little Portugal. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and walk-in wardrobes can be designed to work around them. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. So a van fitting furniture in Little Portugal usually needs a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay arranged through the council. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, so the van can be planned for.
Close to Larkhall Park? Walk-in wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. The wider area includes historic houses such as Buckingham Palace, about 2 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For a family home near Platanos College, the inside of walk-in wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.
