Walk-in wardrobes for your home in Streatham

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Streatham

Most designs start with the hanging. Full-length hanging takes coats, dresses and long garments, and two rails stacked one above the other suit shirts, jackets and trousers. The balance of long and double hanging is based on your clothes. People typically come to us about a built-in dressing table and somewhere for shoes to live; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Sash windows are common in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and their position, along with any shutters, affects where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around Streatham built before 1919, the layout lets the sash open fully and keeps the light unblocked. Doors are chosen and hung so they clear the bed, the radiator and the door to the room.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

From workshop to your room

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. We visit to plan the room and measure the way in, including stairs, landings and doorways.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the units in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry the sections in, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls.

Getting a quote

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Advice

Flats, leases and landlords

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Materials and finishes

Hanging rails

Two rails stacked one above the other make good use of the height.

Spray-painted finish

The colour is agreed with you before we spray.

What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes

There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • How square the room is
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Parking and unloading on your street

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What to send when you get in touch

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:

  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Could you do it yourself?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Questions we’re often asked

I live near Streatham station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

My home in Streatham is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Walk-in wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

How long does fitting take?

It depends on the room. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

Can you build a dressing area in my bedroom?

Yes. We design the units to make a dressing area within the bedroom, and we fit the furniture once any building work is done.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Streatham

Homes built before 1919 make up about 55% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Streatham, with about 17% built between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 18 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Streatham. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Streatham. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Leonard's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. For a flat near Streatham station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 2 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.
