Walk-in wardrobes in Lambeth: how it works

Hanging space is the heart of most walk-in wardrobes. Long hanging suits coats and dresses, and two rails stacked one above the other suit shirts, jackets and trousers. The balance of long and double hanging is based on your clothes. Typical reasons to get in touch are storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe and proper shoe storage; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard.

  1. You let us know about the room.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units and trim the edges to meet the walls and ceiling.
  6. We check everything with you, and fresh paint should be treated gently at first.

How our quotes work

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Why work with us

  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • A design visit, then a quote in writing

Ask for a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Near you in Stockwell

We fit furniture in homes around St Andrew's Church of England Primary School, Durand Academy and The Marquess Of Lorne Public House. Also close by are Lansdowne School (under half a mile south-east), St. Andrew's (a few minutes’ walk south-west) and Max Roach Park (within half a mile east). For rail, the closest station is Brixton station, roughly 0.5 miles south-east. Nearby you will also find St Giles' Hospital (1.7 miles east). Green spaces nearby include Battersea Park Lake.

Bedroom storage across Lambeth

Across Lambeth, from Stockwell, Kennington and Streatham outwards, we design and fit walk-in wardrobes. On an external wall, ventilation is designed in to help keep condensation away. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.

In Lambeth, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 40%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 17%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. More than a third of the homes in Lambeth (about 40%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. A small spare room in an older house can make a good dressing room. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 22% of households in Lambeth, the 2021 Census shows. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

Since August 2023, the Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London, and TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules, so access to homes in Lambeth is planned beforehand.

Stockwell: Near listed buildings like Stockwell Green United Reformed Church, less than half a mile south-east of the centre of Stockwell, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Carlyle's House, about 2.4 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Caring for painted furniture

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Decide on doors or open storage before we measure
  • Know what you’ll keep before planning
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Plan lighting with your electrician

Once the units are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Treat the doors and drawer fronts gently at first, and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. We can’t advise on your lease.

What prompts walk-in wardrobes

Some want somewhere to sit and get ready. A dressing table with drawers and a mirror can sit within a walk-in wardrobe, close to the clothes and shoes.

Here’s what walk-in wardrobes can help with:

  • A bedroom without crowded wardrobes
  • Somewhere to sit and get ready
  • Somewhere for shoes to live
  • Separate space for two people’s clothes

When is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

A bespoke walk-in wardrobe takes more planning than buying a system, and it costs more. What you get is storage designed for what you own and the space you have.

What to check before you book

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job

Pricing walk-in wardrobes in Lambeth

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

Before the design visit

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Where you live, with the postcode

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

How much does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A box room with rails and shelves and a full dressing room with drawers and a dressing table are very different jobs, so we price it after the design visit. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

It’s something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.

Do walk-in wardrobes need ventilation?

Yes. Air needs to circulate around stored clothes, particularly against a cooler external wall. We allow for ventilation in the design.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?

There’s no single right answer. We can fit doors, open storage or both, and we’ll talk it through during the design visit.
