Walk-in wardrobes in North Sheen
About our walk-in wardrobes in North Sheen
A walk-in wardrobe gives your clothes a room of their own. It can be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom, fitted out with hanging, shelves and drawers. We make it all in our workshop and fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. People typically come to us about a dressing area in part of a bedroom and more space for clothes and shoes; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Floors in older houses often slope, and a large share of the homes around North Sheen are that old. Fitted furniture sits on a plinth or adjustable feet set level, so doors close square and the gaps stay even. Where the wall bows, the edge is scribed to follow it.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Fitting day, step by step
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.
- You get in touch with a few details about the room. A line on how you’ll use the room helps.
- We visit, measure and talk through hanging, shoe storage and a dressing table, planned around the way you get dressed.
- You receive a quote in writing.
- The units are made at our workshop.
- The walk-in wardrobe is fitted in your home. Each unit is set level and scribed to the walls.
Preparing the room
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Keep pets in another room while we work
How to get a quote
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Pricing walk-in wardrobes in North Sheen
The price for your room depends on:
- The number of doors and drawers
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Parking near your home
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
What to send when you get in touch
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It’s useful to include:
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Examples of the look you’re after
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Approximate measurements of the space
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?
Modular units are made in fixed sizes, so the space above and at the ends is often wasted. We can build right up to the ceiling and from wall to wall, which can add a lot of storage. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.
Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.
Why us?
- Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
- A spray or hand-painted finish
- We visit, measure and talk through the design before we quote
- Scribed to uneven walls

Practical tips
Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:
- Count your coats and long garments
- Plan lighting with your electrician
- Have damp sorted before fitting
- Leave room for air behind hanging clothes
Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up. A spray finish gives a smooth surface that wipes clean.
Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease early. We cannot advise on your lease.
Bedrooms in North Sheen: local notes
In the area around North Sheen, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 46%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 16%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of North Sheen include West Farm West Lodge (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west, and West Hall (Grade II), under half a mile north. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Richmond upon Thames sets its own rules. If your road in North Sheen falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
If you live near Dukes Meadows, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window. The wider area includes historic houses such as Kew Palace, about 1 mile north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Questions we are often asked
I live near Kew Gardens station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.
Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in North Sheen?
Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London, and North Sheen is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
Is it better to have doors or open storage?
Either works. Doors keep dust off and give a calm, finished look, while open rails and shelves let you see everything. A mix of the two is common.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
How much time does fitting need?
It depends on the room. How long the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote, so you’ll know before we start.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.
Why people ask for walk-in wardrobes in North Sheen
Others want a dressing table built in alongside the storage. We can design a dressing table into the room, close to the clothes and shoes.
Walk-in wardrobes can help with:
- Setting aside a corner of a large bedroom
- A bedroom without crowded wardrobes
- A use for a small spare room
- Room for two wardrobes in one space
If your children go to Kew Riverside Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
