Walk-in wardrobes in Hampstead Garden Suburb: what you get
Lighting makes a big difference in a dressing room. Wiring for new lights is a job for your electrician. We can plan the units so there’s space for the lighting you want, and agree the details at the design visit. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are room for a growing wardrobe and shelves for shoes and bags.
A good part of the housing around Hampstead Garden Suburb is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. The main bedroom may have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Tips worth knowing
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Know what you will keep before planning
- Think about whether you want doors
- Deal with any damp walls first
- Line up your electrician for any new lights
Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and clean easily with a soft cloth.
It helps to know what you will keep before we measure. We plan the layout around your clothes, so it is worth having a sort-out first.
Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Hampstead Garden Suburb
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Hampstead Garden Suburb were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 44%) and before 1919 (about 39%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Hampstead Garden Suburb. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. More than a third of the homes in the area around Hampstead Garden Suburb (about 44%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead.
The wider area includes historic houses like Heath Hall, about 0.8 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. For a family home near The Henrietta Barnett School, the inside of walk-in wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Hampstead Garden Suburb
Will a conservation area stop me having walk-in wardrobes fitted in Hampstead Garden Suburb?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
I live near Brent Cross West station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room.
Do photos help?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
How much time does fitting need?
Every room is different. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
Is it better to have doors or open storage?
That depends on how you like to use the space. We can fit doors, open storage or both, and we’ll talk it through at the design visit.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.
From workshop to your room
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Walk-in wardrobes arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.
- You get in touch and let us know about your clothes, shoes and bags and how you get ready.
- We visit to measure up and work out the layout inside, including any dressing table.
- You receive a written quote for the walk-in wardrobe.
- The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the units in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.
Before fitting day
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
Getting a quote

What we do not do
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:
- Making good walls and ceilings
- Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
- New lights or sockets
If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
Boards, parts and finishes
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hand-painted finish
- Spray-painted finish
- Shoe storage
- Dressing table
- Hanging, shelves and drawers
- Birch plywood
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.
