Loft storage in Hampstead Garden Suburb

Loft storage in Hampstead Garden Suburb

A loft room can hold a great deal of storage, if the low spaces are used well. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, all made for the shape of the room. In Hampstead Garden Suburb, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. Typical reasons to get in touch are needing storage in a loft office and standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In a family house, the hall and stairs usually carry the most clutter. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Hampstead Garden Suburb, fitted storage near the front door can take much of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. First you let us know about the loft room and what you’d like to store there.
  2. We come to measure the room and the way up to it, and go through the design, including the headroom under the slope.
  3. You receive a written quote for the storage we have discussed.
  4. Your storage is built in our workshop and painted to your chosen colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the slopes and the walls.

Before we arrive

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Arranging a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Why bespoke in Hampstead Garden Suburb?

Standalone furniture can move with you, and it may suit a short stay. Fitted storage stays with the house, and it uses the slopes in a way a standalone piece can’t. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and interwar homes often have all three. Fitted furniture is made around them.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

FAQs: loft storage in Hampstead Garden Suburb

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Brent Cross West station?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.

How long does it take to fit loft storage?

How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Because everything is built in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the route up to the loft as clear as possible.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Can you convert my loft as well?

No, the conversion itself isn’t our work. We design and fit storage once the room is in place, including eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers and wardrobes.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Part of Hampstead Garden Suburb is in the Hampstead Garden Suburb Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 50% of households in the streets around Hampstead Garden Suburb live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021. A house like that usually has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Jude, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Living in a block of flats near Brent Cross West station? How it’s made

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters. It goes into the carcasses, the drawers and the shelves. The edge can be left on show or painted.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done in your home after fitting. Small marks are simple to touch in later. That helps in a well-used bedroom.
