Walk-in Wardrobes in Harlington

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on walk-in wardrobes in Harlington starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Harlington

Will a conservation area stop me having walk-in wardrobes fitted in Harlington?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Harlington?

Yes, we work across Hillingdon, Harlington included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.

How much time does fitting need?

Every room is different. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Does a walk-in wardrobe need air flow?

Yes. A room full of clothes needs air moving through it, particularly against a cooler external wall. The units are designed with ventilation in mind.

Walk-in wardrobes in Harlington

With a walk-in wardrobe, clothes, shoes and bags have a space to themselves. We build them in spare rooms, box rooms and corners of bedrooms, with hanging rails, shelving and drawers planned around what you own. We make it all in our workshop and fit it in your home, so it follows the walls and sits level. People typically come to us about somewhere to sit and get ready and hanging for coats, dresses and shirts, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Many homes around Harlington date from the post-war decades, and London’s post-war housing includes flats in blocks as well as houses. Rooms from that time can have lower ceilings than period homes, so walk-in wardrobes are scaled to suit. For a flat, the furniture comes in sections sized for the stairs and lift.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Caring for painted furniture

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Leave room for air behind hanging clothes
  • Decide on doors or open storage before we measure
  • Talk to your electrician early about lighting
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first

New paintwork takes a while to harden after fitting. Go easy on painted surfaces at first, and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease early. We can’t advise on your lease.

Why people ask for walk-in wardrobes in Harlington

Couples sharing a wardrobe often want more space each. A walk-in wardrobe can be planned with a side for each, so neither of you is squeezed.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Shelves for shoes and bags
  • Setting aside a corner of a large bedroom
  • Long and double hanging planned around your clothes
  • Somewhere to sit and get ready

For a family home near William Byrd Primary Academy, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

Flats, conversions and lettings

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases.

Is bespoke worth it?

Fitted storage stays with the house when you move. How long you will stay is worth weighing up before you decide. Several standalone pieces of different sizes can make a plain room look busy, while one fitted run looks calm and uses the space better. It is painted in a colour you choose.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

How fitting day works

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Communal stairs in older blocks often have tight landings, so the size of each section is set by the stairs as well as the lift. Where the building has a caretaker or managing agent, it helps to tell them before fitting day. Common parts are protected while we carry in.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and check how the units will reach the room.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the units in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The units are brought in, assembled and set level.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Advice

Fitted bedroom furniture in Harlington

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Harlington were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 49%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 27%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. The Harlington Village Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Harlington. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Harlington (about 49%) were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Bedrooms from that era tend to be regular, so fitted furniture can run wall to wall, fixed to suit the wall.

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Peter and St Paul, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. Living in a block of flats near Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3 Rail station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
