  • A bay window that’s hard to furnish

Window seats for your home in Harlington

Window seats in Harlington: what you get

A well-made window seat gives you a place to sit in the best light in the room. Our window seats are made for bays, sash windows and the recesses beside them, often with storage underneath behind a lift-up lid or drawers. In Harlington, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. Typical reasons to get in touch are wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room and a recess under the window doing nothing; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Some post-war homes still have their original hall or landing cupboards, often with doors and shelves that are ready for a rethink. Many homes around Harlington date from between 1945 and the early 1970s, so reworking those spaces can be a good place to start. The new storage is made to the opening and fixed to suit the wall.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

How fitting works for window seats

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Stairwells in post-war blocks can have tight turns, so the size of each section is set by the stairs as well as the lift. Letting the caretaker or managing agent know beforehand helps. We cover the floors in shared areas on the way in.

  1. It starts when you contact us with some details about the window, including any radiator under it.
  2. We come to measure and plan the seat, the storage and any radiator grille with you. We also talk about lift-up lids or drawers.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
  4. Your window seat is built in our workshop, shaped to the window. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and the floor. Any radiator grille is fitted so heat can still reach the room.

Preparing the room

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

How to get a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

FAQs: window seats in Harlington

Does a conservation area in or near Harlington affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you make window seats for homes in Harlington?

Yes, Harlington is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hillingdon and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Can you fit a window seat under a sash window?

Yes. Sash windows are a natural place for a seat in many period homes. The cill height and any shutters are measured carefully, so the seat fits without getting in the way of the window. We do not repair sashes or cills.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It’s something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Window seats in Harlington: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Harlington were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 49%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 27%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Bay windows are a feature of many interwar houses, and they suit a seat with storage below, with a grille where there is a radiator underneath.

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Peter and St Paul, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat. For a family home near William Byrd Primary Academy, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. Living in a block of flats near Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3 Rail station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

What affects the price in Harlington

What you pay depends on:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Before the design visit

Ahead of the design visit, we will normally ask about:

  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

For a quote for window seats in Harlington, send us a few details through our contact form. Tell us which room it is and roughly what you have in mind. Next comes a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Why bespoke in Harlington?

A standalone bench can be moved, which is useful if you rent or plan to move soon. Fitted seats stay with the house, and they make more of the window. Which suits you depends on your plans. In a flat with stairs or a small lift, large flat-pack units can be hard to get in, whereas fitted furniture is made in sections sized for the way in. It’s then assembled in the room.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
