Walk-in wardrobes in Kensington, Kensington and Chelsea

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Kensington, each designed at a visit to your home.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Kensington

You don’t need a spare room to have a walk-in wardrobe. A corner or one end of a large bedroom can become a dressing area, with doors or left open. Building a new stud partition is building work, so that’s for your builder, while we make and fit the furniture. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are turning a box room into a dressing room and a bedroom without crowded wardrobes.

A large share of the homes around Kensington were built before 1919, and bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast with an alcove either side. Fitted storage can sit in the alcoves or span the wall, chimney breast and all. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so the pieces are scribed to the wall and levelled at the base.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Looking after your furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Line up your electrician for any new lights
  • Make sure walls are dry before units go in
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Let air move through the space

Adjustable shelves can be moved as your clothes change to suit what you store. A seasonal tidy keeps it working well.

Deal with any damp before the units go in. Cooler external walls can lead to condensation, so we allow for ventilation.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

When you need someone else

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Fixing the cause of damp
  • New lights or sockets
  • Structural changes or removing walls

Not sure whether your space suits walk-in wardrobes? You can use our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Birch plywood

Long shelves in a dressing room need to stay straight, and birch plywood helps.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a softer, traditional look in an older home.

What happens on fitting day

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. We start with the room you have in mind and what needs a home.
  2. We come to measure the room and go through how the space should work, with shoe storage and a dressing table if you’d like them.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the layout, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. We build the carcasses, drawers and shelves in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring everything to your home and fit it to the room. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Before fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Starting with a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Questions from Kensington

Can you fit walk-in wardrobes to the uneven walls of an older house in Kensington?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

My home in Kensington is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

How are walk-in wardrobes priced?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each walk-in wardrobe is different, so we quote once we have measured. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

How long does fitting take?

Every room is different. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

Bedrooms in Kensington: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 69% of the housing in the streets around Kensington, with about 10% built between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Kensington, 21 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. A van working in Kensington will normally need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. We ask about parking at the design visit, so the van can be planned for.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as The Tower House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Barnabas, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. The wider area includes historic houses such as Leighton House, about 0.1 miles south. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
