How we make walk-in wardrobes for Shepherd's Bush

Drawers, shelves and shoe storage make a walk-in wardrobe work day to day. Shelves suit folded clothes and bags, while drawers hold smaller things and shoes get shelving of their own. If the room allows, we can include a dressing table. Most enquiries start with a dressing table with drawers and a mirror and a use for a small spare room; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Sash windows are common in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and the window position and deep reveals affect where furniture can go. For one of the older homes that make up a large share of the housing around Shepherd's Bush, the layout lets the sash open fully and keeps the light unblocked. Doors are chosen and hung so they clear the bed, the radiator and the door to the room.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Shepherd's Bush

My home in Shepherd's Bush is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Shepherd's Bush?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. We cannot advise on leases, so please check yours.

Do walk-in wardrobes need ventilation?

Yes, it helps keep clothes fresh and damp away. The design allows air to circulate and walls should be dry before we fit.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Is bespoke worth it?

There is a place for both. In a square room with a tight budget, a ready-made system may be enough. For awkward rooms, period homes or a built-in look, a bespoke design tends to earn its place. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

Why us?

  • More than 300 projects completed
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made at our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. We start with the space and the clothes it needs to hold, from long coats to shoes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the hanging, shelves and drawers, including any dressing table.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
  4. The units are made and finished in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Fitted bedroom furniture in Shepherd's Bush

About 67% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Shepherd's Bush went up before 1919, and about 14% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Shepherd's Bush is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Hammersmith and Fulham included. Vans bringing furniture to Shepherd's Bush fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Parking and access are planned at the measuring visit.

If you live in a period home close to Shepherd's Bush Tabernacle, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. If your children go to Addison Primary School or a school nearby, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If you live in a flat close to Shepherds Bush station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Tips worth knowing

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Count your coats and long garments
  • Plan lighting with your electrician
  • Think about where shoes and bags will go
  • Sort through your clothes before the design visit

Let air move through the walk-in wardrobe, particularly on a cooler external wall. Leave a little space behind hanging clothes to help air move.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. We cannot advise on your lease.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

What we do not do

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Electrical work in the room
  • Building work to create the room
  • Curing damp in the walls

Not sure whether your space suits walk-in wardrobes? You can use our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
