Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Brompton
A walk-in wardrobe can also be part of a bedroom. A corner or one end of a large bedroom can become a dressing area, either open to the room or behind doors. Building a new stud partition is building work, so that is for your builder, while we make and fit the furniture. Most enquiries start with setting aside a corner of a large bedroom and a built-in dressing table, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Brompton, lots of bedrooms have solid brick external walls. Those walls can be colder than internal ones, so wardrobes and storage on them are designed with ventilation behind and inside to help avoid condensation. Smaller back bedrooms in houses of that age are good places for walk-in wardrobes.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Bedrooms in Brompton: local notes
In the neighbourhood around Brompton, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 69%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 14%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 438 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Brompton. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. Where a home in Brompton is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
If you live in a period home close to Church of St Simon Zelotes, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. For a flat near London Victoria station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. The wider area includes historic houses like Carlyle's House, about 0.8 miles south. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Practical tips
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:
- Give the paint time to cure fully
- Talk to your electrician early about lighting
- Measure how much long hanging you need
- Let air move through the space
We adjust doors and drawers as part of the fitting. Walls and floors shift slightly through the year, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even.
If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.
How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays during the design visit.
- You let us know about the room and what you want to store, from long coats to shoes.
- We visit to measure up and go through the layout, including any dressing table.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
- We build everything in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room. We then check the doors and drawers with you.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
How to get a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Advice
Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?
Fitted storage stays with the house when you move. It is worth thinking about how long you plan to stay before you decide. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that do not meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Brompton
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Brompton?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.
Do you cover homes near London Victoria station?
Yes. We cover all of Kensington and Chelsea and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.
Is ventilation important in a dressing room?
Yes, it helps keep clothes fresh and damp away. The design allows air to circulate, and any damp on the walls should be sorted before fitting.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Flats, leases and landlords
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.
