Questions we are often asked

My home in Little Chelsea is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Walk-in wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Does a conservation area in or near Little Chelsea affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is a box room big enough for a walk-in wardrobe?

Often, yes. We can line a small room with hanging, shelving and drawers and still leave room to move. We check the room at the measuring visit.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Should a walk-in wardrobe have doors?

It is your choice. Doors give a tidy look and help keep dust away, and open storage makes things quick to find. A mix of the two is common.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Little Chelsea

Some people want doors on everything; others like open shelves and rails. Doors give a tidy, finished look and help keep dust away, and open rails make it quick to find things. The choice is yours, and we will go through it when we measure. People normally come to us about moving wardrobes out of the bedroom and somewhere for shoes to live, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Older bedrooms normally have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of homes around Little Chelsea are that old. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Picture rails, skirting boards and coving are met neatly or cut around, so the furniture suits the house.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Materials and finishes

Shelves

Shelves suit folded clothes, bags and boxes. Spans and depths are sized so they don’t sag.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF stays flat and paints beautifully, in any colour you choose.

Tips worth knowing

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Think about whether you want doors
  • Measure how much long hanging you need
  • Let air move through the space
  • Talk to your electrician early about lighting

Once the units are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Go easy on painted surfaces at first, and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth.

If the room is on an external wall, have any damp sorted first. Cooler external walls can lead to condensation, so we allow for ventilation.

Flats, leases and landlords

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

Bedrooms in Little Chelsea: local notes

About 67% of the homes in the streets around Little Chelsea went up before 1919, and about 12% between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Little Chelsea, 25 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 67% of homes in the neighbourhood around Little Chelsea were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). A small spare room in an older house can make a good dressing room, with storage scribed to walls that wander.

If you live near Burton’s Court, keeping walk-in wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. If your children go to Park Walk Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of walk-in wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. If you live in a flat close to Imperial Wharf station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

What happens on fitting day

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You tell us about the room and what you want to store, from long coats to shoes.
  2. We visit to measure up and go through the layout, including any dressing table.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build everything in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room. We then check the doors and drawers with you.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Advice

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Open rail systems are simple and adaptable, and that has real appeal. A fitted walk-in wardrobe adds doors, drawers and shelves where you want them, painted to match the room. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit.
