South Kensington Walk-in Wardrobes
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on walk-in wardrobes in South Kensington starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- A use for a small spare room
- A walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom
- Proper shoe storage
Walk-in wardrobes designed for your room
Flats, leases and landlords
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we’ve measured the way in.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
About our walk-in wardrobes in South Kensington
Most designs start with the hanging. Long hanging suits coats and dresses, and two rails stacked one above the other suit shirts, jackets and trousers. We plan the mix around what you actually wear. If your home has separate space for two people’s clothes and turning a box room into a dressing room, walk-in wardrobes made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
In houses built before 1919, a floor can drop noticeably from one side of a room to the other, and a large share of the homes around South Kensington are that old. Pieces stand on a levelled plinth or adjustable feet, so doors close square and the gaps stay even. Where the wall bows, the edge is scribed to follow it.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Tips worth knowing
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Have damp sorted before fitting
- Talk to your electrician early about lighting
- Know what you will keep before planning
- Measure how much long hanging you need
Once the units are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Go easy on painted surfaces at first, and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth.
It’s useful to know what you’ll keep before we measure. The amount of long hanging, double hanging, shelving and shoe storage depends on what you own, so a clear-out first gives a better design.
FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in South Kensington
I live in a flat in South Kensington. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Does a conservation area in or near South Kensington affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
Does a walk-in wardrobe need air flow?
Yes, it helps keep clothes fresh and damp away. The design allows air to circulate, and any damp on the walls should be sorted before fitting.
Can you build a dressing area in my bedroom?
Yes. We design the units to make a dressing area within the bedroom, and we fit the furniture once any building work is done.
Why people ask for walk-in wardrobes in South Kensington
Some homes have a small room that never quite earns its keep. Fitted out as a walk-in wardrobe, it becomes part of everyday life than keeping a bed in it.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Turning a box room into a dressing room
- Somewhere for shoes to live
- Room for a growing wardrobe
- A built-in dressing table
If you live in a flat close to West Brompton station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Bedroom storage in South Kensington
About 71% of the homes in the area around South Kensington went up before 1919, and about 9% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of South Kensington, 31 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Purpose-built flats are home to about 58% of households in the neighbourhood around South Kensington, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
Close to Burton’s Court? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Luke, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What happens on fitting day
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, as terraced streets are often busy.
