Walk-in wardrobes in Chelsea Harbour: what you get
Many London homes have a small room that’s awkward as a bedroom. Fitted out from wall to wall, it can take the clothes that crowd the bedroom, and the bedroom itself feels calmer. We plan the layout so you can stand, turn and see everything. We make walk-in wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a dressing area in part of a bedroom and proper shoe storage.
In a compact bedroom, the wall above the door and over the bed is often unused. Since most households around Chelsea Harbour live in purpose-built flats, fitted furniture that bridges those spaces is worth considering. Top cupboards suit things you need only now and then, like spare bedding or suitcases.
The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

How it’s made
Hand-painted finish
If you’d like the units to match the room’s woodwork, hand painting on site works well.
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting suits a dressing room that should look crisp, and it is done before fitting.
Questions from Chelsea Harbour
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Chelsea Harbour?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Imperial Wharf station?
Yes. We cover all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
How are walk-in wardrobes priced?
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A box room with rails and shelves and a full dressing room with drawers and a dressing table are very different jobs, so we quote once we have measured. To get started, message us from the contact page.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
How is the furniture painted?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes
In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Some buildings have a concierge, a lift booking system or set working hours, so it’s worth checking with the managing agent ahead of time. Communal areas and floors are protected on the way in.
- First, you tell us about the space and how you dress. It could be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom.
- At the design visit we measure the room and talk through hanging, shelves and drawers.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
- We build the carcasses, drawers and shelves in our workshop.
- We bring everything to your home and fit it to the room. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.
Before we arrive
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Could you do it yourself?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Chelsea Harbour
In the area around Chelsea Harbour, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 36%) and the years since 2000 (about 28%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of Chelsea Harbour, 17 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. About 64% of households in the streets around Chelsea Harbour live in purpose-built flats, the 2021 Census shows. For a flat, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
If you live in a period home close to St Mary's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. If you live near Imperial Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. For families living near Chelsea Academy, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
