Walk-in wardrobes for your home in Merton

About our walk-in wardrobes in Merton

Lighting makes a big difference in a dressing room, and any new lights or wiring are for your electrician. We can plan the units so there’s space for the lighting you want and agree the details when we measure. If you are living with hanging for coats, dresses and shirts and setting aside a corner of a large bedroom, walk-in wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, bedrooms can be anything from a box room to a big front room. Fitted furniture can suit each, sized and laid out for the room. Every wall in Merton homes is measured on site, because none is assumed to be square.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

The problems walk-in wardrobes solve

The most common reason is simply running out of wardrobe space. Rails are crammed, shelves overflow and shoes end up under the bed. A walk-in wardrobe gives everything room.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • A dressing table with drawers and a mirror
  • A bedroom without crowded wardrobes
  • Hanging for coats, dresses and shirts
  • Turning a box room into a dressing room

If your home is one of the older houses near St John The Divine, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Do you cover homes near Haydons Road station?

Yes. We cover the whole of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Merton?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking.

Can you put a walk-in wardrobe in part of a bedroom?

Yes, if there’s enough space. One end or a corner can be set aside with a run of units, open or behind doors. A new partition wall is building work, so that’s for your builder.

Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?

There’s no single right answer. We can fit doors, open storage or both, and we’ll talk it through during the design visit.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. We cannot advise on leases, so please check yours.

Fitting day, step by step

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as we will have talked about during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each unit is levelled and scribed to follow the walls.
  6. Before we leave we go through the doors and drawers with you; new paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Starting with a design visit

To get a quote, get in touch through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Tips worth knowing

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Plan shoe storage around what you own
  • Count your coats and long garments
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Line up your electrician for any new lights

Keep heavy items low and lighter ones high and spread the weight along the rails. That keeps the hanging and shelves in good shape.

A new partition wall is building work, so it comes before us. We fit the furniture once the room is ready.

Bedrooms in Merton: local notes

About 42% of the homes in the streets around Merton went up before 1919, and about 19% between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The Wandle Valley Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Merton. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so the rest of London has its own. Depending on your street in Merton, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

For families living near Merton Abbey Primary School, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If you live near Wandle Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.
