Walk-in wardrobes in Summerstown

Beyond the hanging, drawers, shelves and shoe storage do a lot of the work. Folded knitwear sits well on shelves, smaller things go in drawers and shoes can have racks or shelves of their own. If the room allows, we can include a dressing table. If your home has hanging for coats, dresses and shirts and a use for a small spare room, walk-in wardrobes made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

With a large share of homes around Summerstown built before 1919, lots of bedrooms have solid brick external walls. Those walls can be colder than internal ones, so wardrobes and storage on them are designed with ventilation behind and inside to help avoid condensation. Small back bedrooms and box rooms are common too, and they suit walk-in wardrobes and other fitted storage well.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the walk-in wardrobe we have designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it during the design visit.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. We start with the room you have in mind and what needs a home. It could be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom.
  2. We come to measure the room and go through how the space should work.
  3. You get a written quote for the design we have agreed, for you to read through.
  4. Everything is made and finished in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The units are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls.

Preparing the room

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Starting with a design visit

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Advice

Looking after your furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Plan shoe storage around what you own
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth
  • Let air move through the space

Where we’ve fitted adjustable shelves, you can move them, so the space keeps working. It’s worth a rethink each season.

If the room is on an external wall, have any damp sorted first. External walls can be colder and damper, so we allow for ventilation.

Questions from Summerstown

Does a conservation area in or near Summerstown affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

My home in Summerstown is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Walk-in wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can a box room become a walk-in wardrobe?

In many cases, yes. It depends on the room’s shape and where the door and window sit, so we work it out when we measure.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, message us from the contact page.

Can you put a walk-in wardrobe in part of a bedroom?

Yes, where the room is large enough. A section of the room can become a dressing area, open or behind doors. Any new partition is for your builder, and we fit the furniture.

Pricing walk-in wardrobes in Summerstown

Several things affect the price:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • The overall size of the piece

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Let us know about parking during the design visit.

What to send when you contact us

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
