About our fitted wardrobes in Merton

What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes, so coats and dresses have room and shirts do not waste height. It is worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. People typically come to us about a room too narrow for hinged doors and too little room for clothes, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

The positions of the window, the radiator and the door shape a bedroom more than its size. For any home in Merton, those are the first things we note during the design visit, and fitted furniture is planned around them. Nothing is built tight over a radiator, so the heat still reaches the room.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What it is made from

Hanging rails

Rails are set at heights that suit your clothes: one high rail for long coats and dresses, two rails for shirts and jackets.

Doors and drawer fronts

Door styles range from simple flat fronts to panelled ones. They’re painted to match or contrast with the walls.

How fitting day works

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. The fixings suit whatever the walls are made of. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You let us know about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with your clothes in mind.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We then make the wardrobes in our workshop.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Starting with a design visit

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.

Advice

Fitted bedroom furniture in Merton

In the area around Merton, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 42%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 19%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The centre of Merton is within about a quarter of a mile of the Wandle Valley Conservation Area. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and the rest of London sets its own rules. If your street in Merton is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension through the council may be needed. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.

For families living near Merton Abbey Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. Near listed buildings like London Regional Transport Station, less than half a mile north-west of the centre of Merton, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live in a period home close to St John The Divine, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Merton is about 1 mile north-west of Wimbledon, within the London Borough of Merton. Merton is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Our work takes in places right across the rest of London, large and small.

In SW19, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. We cover homes on streets like High Path, Pincott Road and Hayward Close, along with the roads around them, for fitted wardrobes and any of our other fitted furniture. The A24 run close to Merton; on busy main roads, unloading fitted wardrobes takes a little planning. If you’re just outside Merton, we also cover Merton Abbey (1 mile east), South Wimbledon (1 mile north-west), Colliers Wood (1 mile east), Tooting Bec (1 mile north-east) and Summerstown (1 mile north). Elsewhere in the rest of London, we also cover Morden (2 miles south-west), Eastfields (2 miles east), Crooked Billet (2 miles west), Copse Hill (2 miles west), Mitcham (2 miles south-east) and Hackbridge (2 miles south-east).

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Modular interior systems can be rearranged easily, and that flexibility is useful. A bespoke interior is planned around your clothes from the start. Few rooms have truly flat walls and level floors, and standalone units show it with gaps and wobbles. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room as they go in.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Merton

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Merton?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Merton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Which boards do you build with?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

We allow for it from the start. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?

Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings and fitted storage suits them well. The slope is measured at the measuring visit and the wardrobe scribed to it on site.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The width and height of the space
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Parking and unloading on your street

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit.

Before the design visit

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Where you live, with the postcode

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
