Walk-in wardrobes in Tooting
Most designs start with the hanging. Full-length hanging takes coats, dresses and long garments, while double hanging, one rail above another, fits shirts and jackets into half the height. We plan the mix around what you actually wear. If your home has hanging for coats, dresses and shirts and room for two wardrobes in one space, that’s what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms typically have a chimney breast on one wall and a recess either side. A large share of the homes around Tooting date from before 1919, so many bedrooms there may share that layout. Storage can go in each recess, with a bridge of cupboards over the chimney breast. Any capped chimney is kept ventilated.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
Common questions about walk-in wardrobes
Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Tooting?
Yes, we work across Wandsworth, Tooting included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.
I live in a flat in Tooting. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Walk-in wardrobes are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
Is it better to have doors or open storage?
It’s your choice. Doors keep dust off and give a calm, finished look, and open storage makes things quick to find. A mix of the two is common.
Fitted bedroom furniture in Tooting
Homes built before 1919 make up about 64% of the housing in the streets around Tooting, with about 12% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Tooting, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. All of London, Wandsworth included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Tooting, as it does anywhere else in London. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.
Near listed buildings like Gala Bingo Club, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Tooting, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Close to Wandle Park? Walk-in wardrobes are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. If you live in a period home close to St Augustine, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
What it is made from
Birch plywood
Drawers are opened every day, so we make them strong.
Doors and drawer fronts
Drawers suit smaller things, and they can sit below the hanging or within a run of shelves.
How fitting day works
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays at the measuring visit.
- It starts with a short note from you.
- We come to measure and go through the design.
- You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
- The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each unit is levelled and scribed to follow the walls.
- Before we leave we go through the doors and drawers with you; new paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.
Preparing the room
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
Arranging a design visit
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
