Fitted wardrobes in North Sheen

About our fitted wardrobes in North Sheen

Wardrobes can be built around a bed, with cupboards each side and a run of storage above the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window. We plan the layout so the room still feels open. If your home has musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall and too little room for clothes, fitted wardrobes made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms typically have a chimney breast on one wall and a recess either side. A large share of the homes around North Sheen date from before 1919, so many bedrooms there may share that layout. Storage can go in each recess, with a bridge of cupboards over the chimney breast, leaving the breast itself clear. Any capped chimney is kept ventilated.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Honest limits

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Building work to create a loft room
  • Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising during the design visit.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the room, the floor it’s on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn. Tell us about parking as well, as a van typically needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

How to get a quote

Advice

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in North Sheen

Can you fit fitted wardrobes to the uneven walls of an older house in North Sheen?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in North Sheen?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

What materials do you use?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, and the quote says which is used where.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

How do I get started?

The first step is to fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

Should I send photos?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How many doors and drawers there are

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.

Before the design visit

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • How you want to use the space

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Bedroom storage in North Sheen

About 46% of the homes in the neighbourhood around North Sheen went up before 1919, and about 16% between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of North Sheen, Historic England’s list includes West Farm West Lodge (Grade II), under half a mile north-west, and West Hall (Grade II), under half a mile north. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home in North Sheen is on or near a main road, tell us during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If you live in a period home close to The Barn Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. For a family home near Kew Riverside Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. Kew Palace, about 1 mile north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
