Walk-in wardrobes for your home in Old Coulsdon

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Ready-made wardrobe systems are easy to buy and often cheaper, and in a simple room they may suit. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely fit neatly. A bespoke walk-in wardrobe is made to the room. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and interwar homes often have all three. Fitted furniture is made around them.

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Old Coulsdon

With a walk-in wardrobe, clothes, shoes and bags have a space to themselves. It can be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom, with hanging rails, shelving and drawers planned around what you own. We make it all in our workshop and fit it in your home, so it follows the walls and sits level. People usually come to us about long and double hanging planned around your clothes and room for two wardrobes in one space; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A bedroom in a house from between the wars normally has simpler mouldings than a Victorian one, which makes it simple to take fitted furniture up to the ceiling. Around Old Coulsdon, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses are a big part of the housing, the top cupboards can hold suitcases and spare bedding. Skirting boards are cut around neatly.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Could you do it yourself?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Bedrooms in Old Coulsdon: local notes

About 47% of the homes in the area around Old Coulsdon went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 36% between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Old Coulsdon, Historic England’s list includes Church of St John the Evangelist (Grade I), less than half a mile north, and Taunton Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile north-east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your street in Old Coulsdon joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

For a flat near Coulsdon South station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. For a family home near Keston Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. Close to Dollypers Hill? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Think about whether you want doors
  • Think about where shoes and bags will go
  • Measure how much long hanging you need
  • Sort through your clothes before the design visit

Keep heavy items low and lighter ones high, and do not overload a single rail. That keeps the hanging and shelves in good shape.

Deal with any damp before the units go in. External walls can be colder and damper, so we allow for ventilation.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Old Coulsdon

Do you cover homes near Coulsdon South station?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Old Coulsdon?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on your lease.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

What happens on fitting day

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You tell us about the room and what you want to store, from long coats to shoes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the hanging, shelves and drawers, including any dressing table.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The units are made and finished in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room. We then check the doors and drawers with you.

How to prepare

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Flats, leases and landlords

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.
