Old Coulsdon Loft Storage
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on loft storage in Old Coulsdon starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.
- Unused space in a dormer
- Wasted space behind the knee walls
- A new loft conversion that needs storage
Loft storage designed for your room
Your questions about loft storage in Old Coulsdon
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Old Coulsdon?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Can you make loft storage for a home in Old Coulsdon?
Yes, we work across Croydon, Old Coulsdon included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
What are your eaves cupboards made from?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Stable materials suit a loft, where temperatures can vary. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.
Is it possible to fit a wardrobe under the slope?
Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers lower down. It makes the most of the space. We will work out the layout when we visit.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
How we make loft storage for Old Coulsdon
The low space behind a knee wall is often the most useful in the room. Cupboards and drawers set into the knee wall make that space useful. Pull-out drawers mean you don’t have to crawl in. We measure and plan for the space you have in Old Coulsdon. We make eaves cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a dormer that isn’t being used and boxes piled on loft boards.
Walls in houses from between the wars are normally straighter than in older ones, but seldom perfect. Much of the housing around Old Coulsdon is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the eaves cupboard designed for your room, what it is made from and how it’s finished.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Off-the-shelf pieces come in the maker’s finishes. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it can match the walls and the woodwork. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Practical tips
These points come up often when people plan loft storage. They help whatever the room:
- Decide whether you’d prefer drawers, cupboards or both
- Choose a calm colour for the loft
- Plan where the tall end of a wardrobe can go
- Note the things that need a home in the loft
Keep the ventilation behind the eaves clear. Leave the gaps we have designed in. It helps prevent damp behind the storage.
Sharp edges and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Store tools in a box, not loose against the doors. A small chip on a hand-painted finish is easy to touch in.
Boards, parts and paint
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting suits angled panels and plain fronts alike. It’s carried out in the workshop for an even coat. Any paint colour agreed with you can be used.
Doors and drawer fronts
An access door into the eaves can match the rest of the fronts. It opens wide, so you can still get into the eaves. The other fronts can be doors, drawers or both.
Loft storage for homes in Old Coulsdon
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 47% of the housing in the streets around Old Coulsdon, with about 36% built between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. How we price loft storage
What you pay depends on:
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- The overall size of the piece
- Parking near your home
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
What to send when you get in touch
To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
To make a start, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us which room you have in mind. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.
Fitting day, step by step
In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Eaves cupboards arrive in sections and are assembled in place.
- To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the loft and the storage you want is enough.
- We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
- A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
- We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Preparing the room
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
Ask for a quote
We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
