Bedroom storage in Croydon

Homes built since 2000 make up about 36% of the housing in the area around Croydon, with about 28% built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Croydon, Historic England’s list includes Old Palace Croydon: Great Hall (Grade I), about 0.5 miles north-west, and Old Palace Croydon: Chapel (Grade I), about 0.5 miles north-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Purpose-built flats are more common around Croydon than across the rest of London: about 52% of households, against about 29%, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.

Addington Palace, about 2.5 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. If your home is one of the older houses near St Andrew's, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. If you live near Park Hill Recreation Ground, walk-in wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Croydon is in the London Borough of Croydon, about 2 miles north of Thornton Heath. Croydon is part of the area we cover. Our work takes in places right across the rest of London, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Croydon

Drawers, shelves and shoe storage make a walk-in wardrobe work day to day. Shelves suit folded clothes and bags, while drawers hold smaller things and shoes get shelving of their own. A dressing table with a mirror can be built in where there is space. Most enquiries start with long and double hanging planned around your clothes and more space for clothes and shoes, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Stud walls in newer homes can carry pipes and cables, so the walls are checked before anything is fixed. Many homes around Croydon date from 2000 onwards, so this check is routine. Tall pieces are tied into the studs, not just the board.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished.

Is bespoke worth it?

Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, as well as a bigger outlay. In return, the layout is built around your clothes and your room. In a compact new-build room, standard sizes rarely fit the walls exactly, and fitted furniture uses that space. It can also be planned around boxed-in pipes and risers.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

Why work with us in Croydon

  • Over 300 projects completed
  • A design visit, then a written quote
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home

Take a look at our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf or what to look for in a quote.

Pricing walk-in wardrobes in Croydon

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • Parking near your home
  • How big the furniture is
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How square the room is

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

What to send when you get in touch

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the measuring visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

Questions from Croydon

Does a conservation area in or near Croydon affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

How do you fit walk-in wardrobes in a flat in Croydon?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

Is it better to have doors or open storage?

That depends on how you like to use the space. Doors, open rails and shelves can all be combined, and we’ll talk it through at the measuring visit.

What does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A box room with rails and shelves and a full dressing room with drawers and a dressing table are very different jobs, so we quote once we’ve measured. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

From workshop to your room

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made at our workshop come in next. The time the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

  1. You tell us about the room.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each unit is levelled and scribed to follow the walls.
  6. We check everything with you, and fresh paint should be treated gently at first.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Arranging a design visit
