Fitted home offices in The Hale
How we make fitted home offices for The Hale
Where the window sits affects how comfortable the desk will be. Glare from a window can make a screen tiring to use. We plan the desk position with the window in mind, often with the light to one side. We look at it early during the design visit in The Hale. If you are living with glare from a window on the screen and an alcove or landing that could take a desk, that is what home offices are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
The bay window in a 1930s front room or bedroom gives good daylight for a desk, with shelving or cupboards along the walls beside it. Around The Hale, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing. The desk can be shaped to the bay or set across it, with a grille if there’s a radiator below.
The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Common questions about fitted home offices
Do you make fitted home offices for homes in The Hale?
Yes, The Hale is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barnet and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
Do you cover homes near Mill Hill Broadway station?
Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Which materials go into your home offices?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Shelves are made to suit the load they’ll carry. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
We plan the route in during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Fitting day, step by step
You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about at the measuring visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You tell us how you work and where you’d like the office, whether that’s a spare room, an alcove or a landing.
- At the design visit, the room is measured and the layout planned.
- We agree the desk, shelving and storage, and send a written quote.
- Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
- The office is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you.
Before we arrive
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
Ask for a quote
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote for you to look over. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.
Advice
Flats, blocks and rented homes
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.
Home working in The Hale: local notes
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 58% of the housing in the neighbourhood around The Hale, with about 14% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of The Hale include John Keble Church (Grade II), less than half a mile south. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. More than half of the homes in the streets around The Hale (about 58%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The box room over the stairs in an interwar house is a classic home office, built around the bulkhead.
If your children go to Mathilda Marks-Kennedy Jewish Primary School or a school nearby, a desk with shelves and closed storage can serve both work and homework. If you live in a flat close to Mill Hill Broadway station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf desks come in the maker’s finishes. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it sits with the rest of the room. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

The problems fitted home offices solve
The most common reason is working from home. A kitchen table or a corner of the bedroom soon stops working. A built-in desk and storage make working at home far easier.
Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:
- Wires with no tidy route
- An alcove or landing that could take a desk
- Work things on show in the evening
- Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
Close to Stoneyfields Park? A desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
