How fitting day works
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.
- You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
- We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
- We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
- We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.
Before fitting day
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
How to get a quote
A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Advice
TV and media units in The Hale: what you get
TV units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. You choose a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in the colour you prefer. We work across London, including The Hale. Typical reasons to get in touch are bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room and set-top boxes stacked on a stand, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around The Hale, so it is a layout worth planning for. We tend to plan TV and media units along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Caring for painted furniture
Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:
- Mention parking and stairs when we visit
- Decide where you’ll sit, so the screen height suits it
- Note the screen size you have or plan to buy
- Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
Once your equipment is in, check that it isn’t running hot. Keep vents, gaps and open backs clear of cables and clutter.
Keep heavy speakers and amplifiers on lower shelves.

Flats, leases and landlords
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.
Boards, parts and paint
Hand-painted finish
With hand painting, you judge the colour in your own room. Joins and scribed edges are painted at the same time.
Doors and drawer fronts
Many remote controls need a clear view of the box, so we may leave those shelves open.
TV and media units for homes in The Hale
The biggest shares of homes in the area around The Hale were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 58%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 14%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of The Hale, Historic England’s list includes John Keble Church (Grade II), under half a mile south. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home in The Hale is on or near a main road, tell us at the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.
If your children go to Mathilda Marks-Kennedy Jewish Primary School or a school nearby, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. For a flat near Mill Hill Broadway station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
The Hale is about 4 miles east of Finchley, in the London Borough of Barnet. Whether your home in The Hale is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Our Barnet coverage includes The Hale.

Questions from The Hale
Do you cover homes near Mill Hill Broadway station?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.
Is parking a problem for fitting in The Hale?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
How long does it take to fit a TV unit?
The time on site depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.
How much will my TV unit cost?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.
Do TV units need ventilation?
We plan ventilation into the unit for boxes, consoles and amplifiers, with open backs, gaps or openings. Each box should have its own space and you can check the maker’s guidance on clearances.
Do you need TV and media units in The Hale?
A new, larger TV often prompts it. The old stand no longer suits it, or the screen takes over the room. Shelves and cupboards around the screen make it sit better in the room.
Some of the things we are asked to solve include:
- Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard
- Standard units leaving gaps
- Clutter around the TV
- Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
If you live near Stoneyfields Park, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.
