Fitted wardrobes in The Hale, Barnet

Thinking about fitted wardrobes in The Hale? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing.

  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • Space under the eaves going to waste

Fitted wardrobes in The Hale

Fitted wardrobes for homes in The Hale

What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes. It is useful to think about what you wear most before we meet. People typically come to us about a bedroom that never feels tidy and clothes with nowhere proper to go; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around The Hale, the spare room may be the small one at the front, over the hall and stairs. That’s where fitted wardrobes earn their place, making a small room work as a dressing room, a guest room or both. Every wall is measured and checked, even in a house that looks square.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

What it costs

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Parking near your home

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.

Before the design visit

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Where you live, with the postcode

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, fill in our short enquiry form. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Why bespoke in The Hale?

Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, and standalone units can lean or gap. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Tell us about parking during the design visit.

Questions from The Hale

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in The Hale?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in The Hale?

Yes, we work across Barnet, The Hale included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.

How is the price worked out?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

Will fitted wardrobes get up the stairs to my flat?

The wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors. We measure the stairs, landings and lift as well as the bedroom. In a leasehold flat, it is worth checking the lease first.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character.

What if my bedroom floor isn’t level?

We allow for it from the start. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls.

About 58% of homes in the streets around The Hale date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead.

Close to Stoneyfields Park? Keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. If you live in a flat close to Mill Hill Broadway station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your children go to Mathilda Marks-Kennedy Jewish Primary School or a school nearby, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Fitting day, step by step

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

How to prepare

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

How to get a quote

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

  • Treating damp or mould on the walls
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes
  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it’s made from

  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
