Walk-in wardrobes for your home in Wennington

Walk-in wardrobes in Wennington

Drawers, shelves and shoe storage make a walk-in wardrobe work day to day. Shelves suit folded clothes and bags, while drawers hold smaller things and shoes get shelving of their own. If the room allows, we can include a dressing table. If your home has shelves for shoes and bags and a walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom, walk-in wardrobes made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Around Wennington, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic spot for fitted furniture, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. The main bedroom may have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the walk-in wardrobe we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

Wennington homes and walk-in wardrobes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Wennington were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 47%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 22%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Wennington, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary and St Peter (Grade II*), less than half a mile west, and Lennard Arms Inn (Grade II), under half a mile east. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Wennington (about 47%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead.

Rainham Hall, about 1.5 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. If you live in a flat close to Rainham (Essex) station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If you live in a period home close to St Mary and St Peter's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Wennington is in the London Borough of Havering, about 5 miles north of Romford. Wennington is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Our Havering coverage includes Wennington, along with the rest of the borough.

Every address in RM13 is within our area for walk-in wardrobes, from the main roads to the quieter streets. Neighbouring places we cover for walk-in wardrobes include Hacton (2 miles north), Upminster Bridge (4 miles north), Hornchurch (4 miles north) and North Ockendon (4 miles north-east). Other parts of Havering we cover include Romford (5 miles north), Gallows Corner (6 miles north), Heath Park (5 miles north), Elm Park (3 miles north), Collier Row (6 miles north) and Upminster (4 miles north).

Before and after fitting day

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Think about where shoes and bags will go
  • Decide on doors or open storage before we measure
  • Let air move through the space
  • Know what you will keep before planning

Once the units are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Go easy on painted surfaces at first, and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth.

A new partition wall is building work, so it comes before us. We fit the furniture once the room is ready.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

There’s a place for both. For a simple space, off-the-shelf can do the job. For tricky rooms, period homes or a built-in look, a bespoke design tends to earn its place. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It’s useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

When is bespoke worth it?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Wennington?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Do you make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Wennington?

Yes, we work across Havering, Wennington included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not usually. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Is ventilation important in a dressing room?

Yes. A room full of clothes needs air moving through it, particularly against a cooler external wall. We allow for ventilation in the design.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each unit is levelled and scribed to follow the walls.
  6. Before we leave we go through the doors and drawers with you; new paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
