About our walk-in wardrobes in Hacton

You can have doors, open storage or a mix. Doors give a tidy, finished look and help keep dust away, while open storage lets you see everything at once. We will talk through the options at the design visit. If your home has room for two wardrobes in one space and a built-in dressing table, that is what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A bedroom in a house from between the wars normally has simpler mouldings than a Victorian one, so fitted furniture can often run neatly to the ceiling. If yours is one of the interwar houses or semis that make up much of the housing around Hacton, the top cupboards can hold suitcases and spare bedding. The skirting is scribed around rather than removed.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the room. A line on how you will use the room helps.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through hanging, shoe storage and a dressing table, planned around the way you get dressed.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check every door and drawer. Each unit is set level and scribed to the walls.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Starting with a design visit

To make a start, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Bedrooms in Hacton: local notes

About 42% of the homes in the streets around Hacton went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 29% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 72% of households in the area around Hacton, based on Census 2021. A house like that normally has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier. More than a third of the homes in the area around Hacton (about 42%) date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead.

Rainham Hall, about 2.1 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For a flat near Upminster station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standard systems come in set widths and heights and rarely reach the ceiling. A bespoke design can run to the ceiling and fill the walls, which can add a lot of storage. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall normally ends with a gap, which fitted furniture avoids. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Why people ask for walk-in wardrobes in Hacton

Sometimes a house changes and a room becomes spare. Many people choose to fit it out as a dressing room.

Walk-in wardrobes can help with:

  • Room for a growing wardrobe
  • Shelves for shoes and bags
  • Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom
  • A side each for a couple

If your home is one of the older houses near St Matthews Church Hall, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Parking near your home
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

What to send when you contact us

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, use our contact form.

Questions from Hacton

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Upminster station?

Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Hacton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can a walk-in wardrobe be part of a bedroom?

Yes, if there’s enough space. One end or a corner can be set aside with a run of units, open or behind doors. Any new partition is for your builder, and we fit the furniture.

Can you turn a small spare room into a dressing room?

Often, yes. The layout depends on the room, the door and the window. We plan it during the design visit.

Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?

That depends on how you like to use the space. We can fit doors, open storage or both, and we’ll talk it through during the design visit.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Caring for painted furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Keep the room ventilated
  • Consider a mix of doors and open shelves
  • Measure how much long hanging you need
  • Have damp sorted before fitting

Once the units are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Go easy on painted surfaces at first, and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth.

Talk to your electrician early about lighting. New lights and wiring are for them, and it’s easier to plan the units around it from the start.
