Walk-in wardrobes in Wimbledon Chase

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Wimbledon Chase

About 47% of the homes in the area around Wimbledon Chase went up before 1919, and about 29% between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The centre of Wimbledon Chase is within about a quarter of a mile of the Wimbledon Chase Conservation Area. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 29% of homes in the streets around Wimbledon Chase date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. For a flat near Wimbledon Chase station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary's Church, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Walk-in wardrobes in Wimbledon Chase: what you get

A walk-in wardrobe gives your clothes a room of their own. It can be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom, with hanging rails, shelving and drawers planned around what you own. We make it all in our workshop and fit it in your home, so it follows the walls and sits level. Most enquiries start with a walk-in wardrobe in a box room and a dressing table with drawers and a mirror, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In houses built before 1919, a floor can drop noticeably from one side of a room to the other, and a large share of the homes around Wimbledon Chase are that old. Pieces stand on a levelled plinth or adjustable feet, so doors close square and the gaps stay even. The scribe at the wall takes up any bow in the plaster.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

How it is made

Birch plywood

Drawers are opened every day, so we make them strong.

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors can be flat, framed or panelled, painted to match. Some areas can be left open.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you contact us.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.

Pricing walk-in wardrobes in Wimbledon Chase

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

What to send when you get in touch

When you contact us, these help most:

  • How you want to use the space
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Before and after fitting day

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Decide on doors or open storage before we measure
  • Count your shoes before the design visit
  • Plan lighting with your electrician
  • Let air move through the space

Store heavy things on lower shelves and spread the weight along the rails. It helps the shelves and rails stay straight.

If you want a partition to create the walk-in wardrobe, talk to a builder first. We make and fit the units inside.

How fitting day works

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You let us know about the room and what you want to store.
  2. We visit to measure up and go through the layout, including any dressing table.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build everything in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

How to get a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, message us from the contact page. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Advice

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Wimbledon Chase

My house in Wimbledon Chase is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you do the electrics for the lighting?

No, that’s electrical work for your electrician. We are carpenters, so we make and fit the units and leave room for the lighting.

Can a box room become a walk-in wardrobe?

In many cases, yes. The layout depends on the room, the door and the window. We plan it during the design visit.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

How are walk-in wardrobes priced?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
