Walk-in wardrobes in Merton Park

Many London homes have a small room that’s awkward as a bedroom. Lined with hanging and shelves, it can hold far more than a wardrobe in the bedroom, leaving the bedroom with more space. The layout leaves room to move and to see what you have. We make walk-in wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a walk-in wardrobe in a box room and a side each for a couple.

Sash windows are common in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and the window position and deep reveals affect where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around Merton Park built before 1919, we plan the layout so the window opens fully and the light still comes in. Doors are chosen and hung so they clear the bed, the radiator and the door to the room.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it’s useful to tell us during the design visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. First, you tell us about the space. A line on how you will use the room helps.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and the layout inside, planned around the way you get dressed.
  3. A written quote is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The units are made at our workshop.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check every door and drawer. Each unit is set level and scribed to the walls.

Before fitting day

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Fitted bedroom furniture in Merton Park

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Merton Park were built before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 29%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List records 11 entries within half a mile of the centre of Merton Park. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Merton is inside it. Vans bringing furniture to Merton Park fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.

Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Merton Park, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Southside House, about 1.4 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?

Fitted storage stays with the house when you move. How long you will stay is worth weighing up before you decide. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it cannot tip, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

When you need someone else

Not everything around walk-in wardrobes is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Curing damp in the walls
  • Building work to create the room
  • New lights or sockets

Why people ask for walk-in wardrobes in Merton Park

After a loft conversion or a change of layout, a room may be left without a clear use. A walk-in wardrobe is a popular way to use it.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Somewhere to sit and get ready
  • Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom
  • Somewhere for shoes to live
  • A side each for a couple

For an older house near St Mary's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?

Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?

That depends on how you like to use the space. We can fit doors, open storage or both, and we’ll talk it through during the design visit.

How are walk-in wardrobes priced?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A box room with rails and shelves and a full dressing room with drawers and a dressing table are very different jobs, so we quote once we have measured. To get started, drop us a line using the contact form.

How we price walk-in wardrobes

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Parking near your home
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What to send when you get in touch

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
