Window seats in Wimbledon Chase

How we make window seats for Wimbledon Chase

Cushions aren’t something we supply, so we agree the seat size with you and you can have one made to fit. You can then choose the fabric and style yourself. We plan the depth and height so the seat is comfortable with a cushion on it. If you’re living with no comfortable place to sit in the light and a radiator that makes the space hard to use, window seats made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

Hallways in period terraces are often long and narrow, with the stairs rising along one wall. Around Wimbledon Chase, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so depth matters as much as width wherever storage goes. Shallow units keep the way through clear.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Questions from Wimbledon Chase

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Wimbledon Chase station?

Yes, homes across Merton and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit window seats to the uneven walls of an older house in Wimbledon Chase?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Which materials go into your window seats?

The seat is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the frame and seat, and MDF takes paint well for the fronts and grilles. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

What prompts window seats in Wimbledon Chase

Some people plan a window seat as part of updating a room. It is worth talking to us before decorating, so the work can be timed sensibly. We make and fit the seat, and your decorator handles the walls.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Wanting a seat without blocking the radiator
  • Toys spread across a bedroom floor
  • A bay window that is hard to furnish
  • Looking for a reading spot by the window

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?

How to choose a carpenter in London

How we price window seats

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • How square the room is
  • How big the furniture is
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The number of doors and drawers

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Helping us understand the room

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

To get a quote for window seats in Wimbledon Chase, fill in our short enquiry form. Let us know the room and the rough idea, plus any rough sizes. We will arrange a design visit, then send a quote in writing.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be applied once the seat is in place. Marks can be touched in without much trouble. Like any new paint, it needs time to cure fully.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish works well on grilles as well as flat fronts. It’s carried out in the workshop for an even coat. The colour is your choice.

Fitting day, step by step

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the bay or sash window is enough.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out how warm air from the radiator will reach the room.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the seat and the grille.
  4. In our workshop the seat is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the grille made to match.
  5. The seat is fitted with the radiator grille in place, so the heat keeps moving.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
