Walk-in wardrobes in Cannon Hill

Our walk-in wardrobes are made for homes in Cannon Hill and all over London. We begin with a design visit, measuring the room and talking through the design, then a written quote. Once agreed, we make the units in our workshop and fit them in your home. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. People typically come to us about moving wardrobes out of the bedroom and a walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In a 1930s semi, the main bedroom often sits over the front room and its bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Cannon Hill, so it’s a room shape worth planning for. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Cannon Hill?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do you make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Cannon Hill?

Yes. Cannon Hill is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Merton and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Can you build a dressing area in my bedroom?

Yes. We design the units to make a dressing area within the bedroom, and we fit the furniture once any building work is done.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

It’s made in sections. At the design visit, we measure the route not just the room.

How long will the walk-in wardrobe take to fit?

Every room is different. The time the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

What happens on fitting day

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are typically simple, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. Walk-in wardrobes arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You tell us about the room.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the design.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each unit is levelled and scribed to follow the walls.
  6. We check everything with you, and fresh paint should be treated gently at first.

Before we arrive

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Ask for a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

What it is made from

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes and shelves. The edge can be left on show or painted.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF stays flat and paints beautifully, in any colour you choose.

Why people ask for walk-in wardrobes in Cannon Hill

Most people come to us because their clothes have outgrown their wardrobes. Clothes are squashed together and shoes pile up. A dressing room spreads it all out so you can see it.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • The right mix of long and short hanging
  • Turning a box room into a dressing room
  • Proper shoe storage
  • Somewhere to sit and get ready

If you live in a period home close to St James Merton, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

Bedroom storage in Cannon Hill

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Cannon Hill were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 61%) and before 1919 (about 16%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Cannon Hill, 9 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. More than half of the homes in the area around Cannon Hill (about 61%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead.

For a flat near South Merton station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. If you live near Cannon Hill Common, walk-in wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Caring for painted furniture

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Think about where shoes and bags will go
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Keep the room ventilated
  • Talk to your electrician early about lighting

We adjust doors and drawers as part of the fitting. Houses move a little with the seasons, so hinges allow small adjustments later.

Deal with any damp before the units go in. Cooler external walls can lead to condensation, and ventilation inside the units helps.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising during the design visit.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you get in touch.
