Wall beds in Charlton

A wall bed, sometimes called a Murphy bed, lifts up into a cabinet during the day and is lowered again at night. It means a room can work as more than a bedroom, so a guest room can double as a study or playroom. We make the cabinet for your room and finish it to match. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about shelves or a desk around the bed and a bed that fills a little-used room.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, so a bedroom could have solid brick walls, lath and plaster, blockwork or plasterboard. Each wall is checked at the measuring visit before fixings are chosen. With a chimney breast, the alcoves are the obvious place; without one, a full wall normally is.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, which is a fair point in its favour. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them day after day. Recesses, sloping ceilings and tricky corners are where ready-made furniture struggles most, and most homes have one somewhere. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Caring for painted furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Allow space for pillows and duvets
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Keep children away while the bed moves
  • Decide who the bed is mainly for

Whether bedding can stay on the bed when it folds up depends on the mechanism. We can build a cupboard beside the bed for extra bedding.

Check how much floor there is in front of the cabinet. You need clear space for the bed to come down, so plan where furniture will sit.

Your questions about wall beds in Charlton

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Charlton?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.

What space does a fold-down bed take up?

It depends on the bed size and the mechanism. We measure up and make sure the bed has room to fold down.

Do you work outside London?

No. We only take on work in London, across all the boroughs and the City of London.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Charlton

About 34% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Charlton went up before 1919, and about 29% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Charlton include Charlton House (Grade I), about 0.5 miles south, and Stable Buildings to South West of Charlton House (Grade I), about 0.5 miles south. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Purpose-built flats are home to about 43% of households in the neighbourhood around Charlton, the 2021 Census shows. For a flat, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

If you live near Charlton Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. Queen's House, about 1.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. If your children go to Thorntree Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

What affects the cost of wall beds

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How square the room is
  • The number of doors and drawers

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

What we need to know

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

To make a start, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.

How fitting day works

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
  4. We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
  6. We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Ask for a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, use our contact form.
