Where other trades come in
We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:
- Building work to make a wall sound
- Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
- New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Wall beds for homes in New Eltham
The bed mechanism must be fixed securely, exactly as its maker specifies, to a wall and floor that can take the load. At the design visit we look at the wall it will go on, because the fixing has to suit what the wall is made of. If you are living with a study that doubles as a spare room and a real mattress for visitors, that’s what wall beds are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Bedrooms in interwar houses often have a picture rail but a plainer ceiling than a Victorian room, so fitted furniture can often run neatly to the ceiling. If yours is one of the interwar houses or semis that make up much of the housing around New Eltham, high cupboards make a good home for suitcases and spare bedding. Skirting boards are cut around neatly.
We write quotes in plain English. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Materials and finishes
Spray-painted finish
We spray paint in the workshop for a smooth, factory-like finish.
Birch plywood
Shelving around the bed needs to stay straight, and birch plywood helps.
How fitting works for wall beds
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.
- You let us know about the room and who the bed is for. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
- We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of, as the bed must be fixed securely.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
- The bed housing and any shelves are made in our workshop.
- Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts.
Before we arrive
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Starting with a design visit
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.

Questions we’re often asked
Does a conservation area in or near New Eltham affect fitted furniture?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in New Eltham?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
Will you paint the walls around the furniture?
No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.
How is the furniture painted?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We’ll design around them.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you.
Fitted bedroom furniture in New Eltham
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around New Eltham were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 59%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 22%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of New Eltham include Southend House (Grade II), about 0.6 miles north-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. More than half of the homes in the streets around New Eltham (about 59%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead.
Close to Elmstead Wood? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. For an older house near All Saints Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Living in a block of flats near New Eltham station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.
Practical tips
Getting the most from wall beds starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Consider how many people will sleep in it
- Leaseholders: check your lease first
- Check there’s room for the bed to fold down
- Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
Whether bedding can stay on the bed when it folds up depends on the mechanism. Bulky duvets and pillows may need storing nearby.
Measure the space in front of the wall, not just the wall. You need clear space for the bed to come down, so plan where furniture will sit.
