Wall beds in New Charlton

About our wall beds in New Charlton

Many people now work from home in a room that also has to sleep guests. We can design a wall with a fold-down bed and a desk or shelving around it, without the bed taking over. We can allow for cables to the desk, though any new sockets are for your electrician. If your home has a spare room that’s rarely slept in and a guest bed that disappears in the day, wall beds made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

The positions of the window, the radiator and the door shape a bedroom more than its size. Whatever kind of home you have in New Charlton, we start there, then plan fitted furniture on the walls that are left. Furniture is kept clear of radiators so the room stays warm.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What happens on fitting day

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about during the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route in before fitting day, including anything on the walls near the work. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Sections are then carried in and assembled.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and how often the bed is used. A desk or shelving around the bed can be part of it.
  2. We come to measure, look at the wall and floor, and go through the layout with you.
  3. You get a written quote for the bed cabinet and any storage around it.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop.
  5. The bed and cabinets are fitted in your home and the mechanism fixed securely. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.

Preparing the room

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Ask for a quote

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

How we price wall beds

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What we need to know

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, message us from the contact page with some details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, which is a fair point in its favour. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them day after day. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a recess, a slope or an odd corner, and most homes have at least one. Built-in pieces are made to fit them.

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Questions from New Charlton

Do you cover homes near Charlton station?

Yes, homes across Greenwich and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make wall beds for homes in New Charlton?

Yes, New Charlton is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Greenwich and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. Check your lease, as we can’t advise on it.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

What space does a fold-down bed take up?

That varies with the size of the bed. At the design visit we measure the room and check there is enough space in front.

Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. New Charlton is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records.
