Charlton Loft Storage
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on loft storage in Charlton starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.
- Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
- Needing storage in a loft office
- A loft room that still feels unfinished

Loft storage in Charlton: local notes
About 34% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Charlton went up before 1919, and about 29% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 16 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Charlton. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. So a van fitting furniture in Charlton usually needs a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay arranged through the council. We ask about parking at the design visit, so the van can be planned for.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 1.9 miles west. If your own home is a period one, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even. Close to Charlton Park? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.
Charlton is about 2 miles east of Plumstead, within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. We cover Charlton as part of our work across Greenwich, and the process is the same everywhere we work. In Greenwich, Charlton is one of the places we cover, and the borough has 18 places on our list.
Every home in SE7 and SE18 is within our area for loft storage. Whether you live on a street like Floyd Road, Guild Road and Priolo Road or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for loft storage. Other places close to Charlton include New Charlton (1 mile north-west), Westcombe Park (1 mile west), Woolwich (1 mile east), Vanbrugh Park Estate (1 mile south-west) and Kidbrooke (2 miles south). Across the rest of Greenwich, our area takes in Plumstead (2 miles east), Greenwich (2 miles west), Eltham (3 miles south), Well Hall (2 miles south), Coldharbour (4 miles south) and New Eltham (4 miles south).
Local landmarks in Charlton
Our area takes in the homes around The Victoria pub and Wildwood Montessori School. Charlton has its own railway station: Charlton station. Well-known places in the area include Greenwich Castle (1.9 miles west) and Charlton Athletic Museum (within half a mile south-west). For a walk, there is Gilbert's Pit.
Loft storage for homes in Charlton
We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. We don’t carry out loft conversions, and Building Regulations apply to a conversion. Once the room is finished, we can design storage to suit it. If you have a converted loft in Charlton, the design visit is the first step. We make eaves cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are boxes piled on loft boards and clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom.
Where housing is mixed, as in much of London, floors, walls and ceilings vary from one home to the next. Each piece is scribed to the wall and set level, whatever the room is like. The finish, spray-painted or hand-painted, is agreed with you.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the eaves cupboard we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished.

Why bespoke in Charlton?
Off-the-shelf pieces come in the maker’s finishes. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it can match the walls and the woodwork. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a recess, a slope or an odd corner, and most homes have at least one. Built-in pieces are made to fit them.
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What it costs
Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- The width and height of the space
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Doors and drawers, and how many
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Before the design visit
Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Examples of the look you are after
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
What happens on fitting day
You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. The fixings suit whatever the walls are made of. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Advice
Your questions about loft storage in Charlton
Can you make loft storage for a home in Charlton?
Yes. We cover all of Greenwich and the rest of London, and Charlton is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.
I live near Charlton station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Greenwich and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
Will the storage fit up my loft stairs?
Measuring the route is part of the design visit. We size every section for the tightest turn, and the pieces are put together in the room.
When is bespoke worth it?
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Is it time for loft storage?
Some people have a boarded loft and want proper shelving. Shelves and cupboards keep things off the floor and easy to find. It suits seasonal things and boxes.
Here’s what loft storage can help with:
- Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
- No wardrobe that fits under the slope
- Space under the eaves going to waste
- A new loft conversion that needs storage
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Charlton House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
