FAQs: wall beds in Westcombe Park

I live in a flat in Westcombe Park. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do you cover homes near Westcombe Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Greenwich and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Can a wall bed have storage around it?

Yes. We often design the bed as part of a wider storage wall, so the whole wall is useful. We plan it so the bed still has room to come down.

Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?

We check that at the measuring visit. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker’s instructions set what’s needed.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

How we make wall beds for Westcombe Park

The mattress has to suit the mechanism, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We will talk through what suits the bed at the design visit, so you can choose a mattress that works. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about shelves or a desk around the bed and a hobby room with a bed for guests.

A large number of homes around Westcombe Park date from 2000 onwards, and in newer homes, bedrooms tend to be compact, with plasterboard stud walls. Wall beds are fixed into the studs or held by fixings made for the board. Where a small built-in cupboard came with the home, it can be reworked as part of the design.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished.

From workshop to your room

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so let us know what applies during the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
  2. At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the wall bed and any storage.
  4. We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
  6. We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.

Before fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

How to get a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Advice

Wall beds for homes in Westcombe Park

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Westcombe Park were built before 1919 (about 37%) and since 2000 (about 37%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Part of Westcombe Park is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. So a van fitting furniture in Westcombe Park normally needs a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay arranged through the council. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 1 mile west. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. If you live in a period home close to St George's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.

Westcombe Park is about 3 miles east of Plumstead, in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. We can visit homes in Westcombe Park on weekdays, or on a Saturday by arrangement. We cover places right across Greenwich, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

Do you need wall beds in Westcombe Park?

A flexible room is useful as needs change. We often hear from people who want a playroom or study that can still sleep guests when it’s needed.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • A real mattress for visitors
  • Shelves or a desk around the bed
  • A studio that works by day and night
  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day

Near listed buildings like East Greenwich Library, under half a mile north-west of the centre of Westcombe Park, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What to check before you book

  • How parking will work on your street
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf units can leave gaps at the sides or top. A bespoke cabinet can run the full width and height and fill the rest of the wall with storage. In an open-plan room, standalone pieces can look scattered, whereas fitted furniture can define each part of the room.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Why choose us

  • Every quote follows a design visit
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Work across the whole of London
  • Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement

Read how bespoke compares with ready-made or how to compare quotes.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

We can hand paint the cabinet in your home, once it’s fitted. It is easy to touch up later.

Moisture-resistant MDF

The moisture-resistant grade suits cabinets on cooler external walls, alongside good ventilation.

Before and after fitting day

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Let us know about the wall’s construction
  • Keep children away while the bed moves
  • Check mattress size and weight limits

Check the mattress stays within the limits the mechanism maker sets, because a mattress outside those limits can affect the balance. If you change the mattress later, check it against those limits.

Think about who will sleep in the bed and how often. It shapes the bed size and the type of mechanism, and whether a desk or shelves go around it.
