Wall beds in Plumstead
About our wall beds in Plumstead
We build the bed housing from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. From the front, the folded bed can look like a set of tall cupboards, sitting quietly in the room. If your home has a home office that also sleeps guests and more floor space in a studio flat, wall beds made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
Older bedrooms bring bowed walls and high ceilings, newer ones stud walls and lower ceilings. A home in Plumstead might be either, or neither. We scribe, level and fix to suit whichever you have. Ceiling height sets how tall the furniture can go.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the wall bed designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the design visit.
Bedroom storage in Plumstead
Homes built before 1919 make up about 39% of the housing in the area around Plumstead, with about 29% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Plumstead include The Old Vicarage (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west, and Plumstead Fire Station (Grade II), about 0.5 miles east. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. A quarter or more of the homes in the neighbourhood around Plumstead (about 29%) were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board.
If your home is one of the older houses near St John's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. Living in a block of flats near Plumstead station? Then it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Danson House, about 2.7 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

What happens on fitting day
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
- At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
- You receive a quote in writing for the wall bed and any storage.
- We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
- We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.
Before we arrive
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

When is bespoke worth it?
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
Is bespoke worth it?
A standard bed is simple and needs no mechanism, and that has its appeal. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them day after day. A standard unit is the same in every home, whatever the room is like, while fitted furniture is drawn for the room it goes into. It can be painted in a colour chosen for that room.
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Questions from Plumstead
Do you cover homes near Plumstead station?
Yes, homes across Greenwich and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Does a conservation area in or near Plumstead affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
How long will the wall bed take to fit?
How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will talk it through during the design visit.
Is it possible to add a desk beside the wall bed?
Yes, that’s a common request. Shelves and cupboards around the bed make the most of the space, and any new sockets are for your electrician.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.
Looking after your furniture
These points come up often when people plan wall beds. They help whatever the room:
- Let us know about the wall’s construction
- Keep the floor in front clear before lowering the bed
- Allow space for pillows and duvets
- Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth
The mechanism maker’s guidance says how much bedding can stay on the bed when it folds away. Bulky duvets and pillows may need storing nearby.
Think about who will sleep in the bed and how often. It shapes the bed size and the type of mechanism as well as the storage around it.
