Wall Beds in Woolwich

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on wall beds in Woolwich starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • A bed that fills a little-used room
  • A studio that works by day and night
  • Storage built around a fold-down bed

The problems wall beds solve

A flexible room is useful as needs change. A playroom, a study or a hobby room can still have a bed for visitors when it is needed.

Wall beds can help with:

  • Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
  • Shelves or a desk around the bed
  • A home office that also sleeps guests
  • A playroom that can sleep visitors

Queen's House, about 2.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Wall beds in Woolwich

Our wall beds are made for homes in Woolwich and all over London. First comes a design visit, where we measure and look at the wall, then a quote in writing. We make everything in our workshop and fit it in your home. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If you’re living with hiding the bed when it’s not in use and a living room with a bed that folds away, wall beds made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Most households around Woolwich live in purpose-built flats, so bedroom space is often tight and every wall counts. Taking fitted furniture up to the ceiling adds storage without using more floor. Each piece is made in sections sized for the stairs, lift and doors, and assembled once it’s inside.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Fitting day, step by step

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Some buildings have a concierge, a lift booking system or set working hours, so it’s worth checking with the managing agent ahead of time. Communal areas and floors are protected on the way in.

  1. You contact us about a wall bed for a spare room or studio.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, from the front door to the room itself.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the bed cabinet in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.

Before fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Getting a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A wall bed is fixed to the house, so it stays when you move. How long you’ll be in the home is worth weighing up before choosing built-in. Standard furniture sizes rarely suit the shape of a flat, so it can waste space or block a door or radiator. Built-in pieces are designed around them.

Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Woolwich

  • A design visit, then a written quote
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
  • Saturdays by prior arrangement
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose

Questions from Woolwich

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you cover homes near Woolwich Dockyard station?

Yes. We cover all of Greenwich and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, message us from the contact page.

How are wall beds priced?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, storage and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

How much space does a wall bed need?

That comes down to the size of the bed. We measure up and make sure the bed has room to fold down.

Honest limits

Before you plan the job, it is useful to know what we do not do:

  • Strengthening or rebuilding a wall
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
  • Making good the walls after other work

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from

  • Birch plywood
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Hand-painted finish

Woolwich homes and wall beds

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Woolwich were built since 2000 (about 31%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Part of Woolwich is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Greenwich included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Woolwich is covered by it. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.

For a flat near Woolwich Dockyard station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Woolwich Town Hall, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

What affects the cost of wall beds

The price for your room depends on:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How square the room is
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Before the design visit

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
